1990 - 0038.PDF
CALENDAR FOR THE 1990s Aerospace enters the new decade in a dichotomy: the civil sector booms while the future of defence aviation looks more uncertain. If passenger growth estimates released by organisations like IATA are only half true then new aircraft types like the Airbus A330 and McDonnell Douglas MD-90 will enter service in a period of continuing heavy fleet acquisition by the airlines. By contrast, defence aviation faces an uncertain time. Political and economic change, particularly in Eastern Europe, has turned prospects from boom to potential bust inside 18 months. A number of the programmes listed in this calendar may not survive the forecast heavy budgets cuts by the US. The timings we have used are not precise, except where an asterisk (*) is used aganst a programme. Projects will be delayed for various reasons — the BAe 1000 business jet schedule, for example, has already been delayed by industrial problems in the UK. o ON ON ON ON ON ON m ON ON ON ON U-l ON ON NO ON ON ON o- X ON ON ON ON ON JANUARY FEBRUARY MARCH APRIL MAY Northrop YF-23 ATF rollout * Lockheed YF-22 ATF rollout * Embraer/ * Rockwell/MBB X-31 first flight FAMA * Tay One-Eleven first flight CBA-123 flies • BAe 1000 first flight- TBM700 certification ' JSTARS European evaluation * TTTS contract award (USA) * Hubble space telescope launch * Trident 2 missile deployment (USA) Dassault Rafale D first flight Embraer EMB-145 first flight • • Cessna Citationjet first flight ' Briton-in-space flight to Mir NH-90 development begins RAF Boeing E-3 enters service Boeing 707 line closes BAe 1000 deliveries begin Eurocopter Tiger first flight * Shuttle Endeavour complete * Shuttle Endeavour first flight? — Lockheed P-7 first flight? — Soviet Buran shuttle first manned flight " j Above: Airbus A34 Canadair RJ certification Airbus A321 first flight - • Japan H-II Strategic Defense Initiative Phase 1 deployment decision (USA) — Dornier 328 deliveries begin • Airbus A3 21 enters service -JPATS contract!
