For over 45 years Ferranti Defence Systems has been supplying a range of advanced equipment with proven performance where it counts - in operation. With the personnel and the physical resources in-house, Ferranti Defence Systems is continuing a track record of success that stands head and shoulders above the rest. Status report • The first flight of a Blue Kestrel radar-equipped EH101 Merlin helicopter marks a significant step in the programme to equip the Royal Navy with the Merlin, for which Blue Kestrel has been developed under UK Ministry of Defence contract. • The company has been selected, in a contract worth in excess of £16 million, as prime contractor for the supply of NATO Ships Inertial Navigation Systems (SINS) to the Navies of Canada, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. • Mapcase, a tactical map display and message-handling system, has been evaluated in a Chieftain tank at the British Army's Armoured Trials and Development Unit and demonstrated major tactical advantages over existing methods. The system has been developed to equip any fighting vehicle or battlefield helicopter below battle-group level. • A Blue Vixen 'B' model radar has flown for the first time in a BAe 125. This signals the completion of another milestone in the programme to equip the Royal Navy's Sea Harrier FRS2 fighters and marks the beginning of the use of the radar for weapon system integration. • The first AST1200 series ATE (Automatic Test Equipment) has been delivered to the RAF in West Germany. The AST (Avionic System Tester) will be used for forward-deployable support of the Harrier GR5 aircraft's inertial navigation system.
