UTILITY AIRCRAFT DIRECTORY combi and quick-change cargo/combi config urations in addition to the basic 36-seat (Series 100) or 56-seat (Series 300) regional airliner-layouts. The aircraft has a large inward-opening door for cargo loading and a 4,470kg payload capability. Although the basic Avions de Transport Regional (Aerospatiale/Aeritalia) ATR42 is a 42-seat regional airliner, there is also a 42F freighter version capable of carrying five LD3 containers or 3,800kg, loaded through a large cargo door. Weighing in 19,890kg, Canadair's turbo prop-powered CL-215T amphibian is the heaviest aircraft listed in this directory—and also one of the most versatile, offered as a 32- seat passenger carrier, 11-seat combi, all- cargo freighter and, of course, firefighting waterbomber. Canadair built 125 piston- powered CL-215s, production ending in 1989. Although the first Pratt & Whitney Canada PW123-powered 215T flew in June 1989, Canadair has yet to put the amphibian back into production, orders received so far being to convert existing piston-powered aircraft. \ THINGS TO COME ~ Perhaps the most interesting development on the horizon is Japanese company Ishida's The ATR42L: regional airliner or freighter plan to build a 14/16-seat tilt-wing aircraft, the TW-68, that would also be available in corporate or cargo configurations. Ishida believes that a tilt-wing is more commercially viable than a civil tilt-rotor, such as a deriva tive of the Bell-Boeing V-22. Design work is under way in the USA, aiming for a first flight in 1993 and deliveries in 1996. Preliminary specifications include a 5,670kg maximum vertical take-off weight, increasing to 7,480kg for a short take-off. EUROFAR is a European project to devel op a 30-passenger tilt-rotor transport which, funds forthcoming, could fly as early as 1994. Less compromised than the carrier-borne V- 22, EUROFAR will be a more-efficient multi purpose transport, the European partners believe. Whether funding can be found re mains uncertain, however. Another new project is the Aeritalia/Dor- nier Advanced Amphibian Aircraft (AAA)—a potential competitor to the CL-21ST that could see service in 1996. Still in the study stage, the twin-turbine AAA would weigh in at 23,000kg for land operations, carrying a 4,000kg payload or 33 passengers. Discus sions continue with other potential European partners in the project. Also intriguing are Soviet design bureau Sukhoi's studies of an 18/19-passenger twin- trubine aircraft that would be available in freighter and medevac versions as well. The tandem-wing twin-boom S-80 resembles Scaled Composites' Advanced Technology Tactical Transport (AT3)—a 62%-scale proof- of-concept aircraft built to test the configura tion of an innovative STOL transporter. A similar Soviet twin-boom project is Mikoyan's 10IN 16-passenger regional air liner and utility aircraft, powered by two l,110kW turboprops, and the 101M short take-off and landing (STOL) transport with two l,850kW turboprops and reduced-span high-lift wing. The MiG-101 resembles Rock well's OV-10 Bronco STOL aircraft. Sukhoi's S-80 is just one of many designs that Soviet design bureaux are experimenting with as they endeavour to diversify away from military projects. Evidently the Soviets see the potential for profit in utility aircraft.^ Type Engine Cabin size (ft/m) Width Height Pass engers Weight (lb/kg) Cruise speeds Normal empty Max fuel Max take-off Max landing Max (kt) Long range Balanced field length (ft) Max (nm/km) CASA C. 212 Aviocar Srs 300 2 x 900shp <665kW) Garrett TPE331 -1 OR 6-9(2-1) 5-9(1-8) 23-26 10,538(4,780) 3,600(1,635)16,975(7,700) 16,424(7,450) 194(360) 162(300) 2,836(865) 775(1,435) 10,5381b (4,780kg) is operating empty weight.
