Pan Air Lineas Aereas was formed in i988 as a freight charter airline to operate services throughout Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The carrier is owned by TNT (25%), and private Spanish interests. The airline operates regular night freight services for TNT and uses its aircraft during the day and at weekends for ad hoc charters. Pan American World Airways (Pan Am), a subsidiary of Pan American Corporation, has continued \o experience financial difficulties and recent press reports would indi cate that the airline itself is for sale. The company has incurred losses of over $1 billion since 1980. Routes: Pan Am operates an extensive international network of sched uled passenger and cargo services to the Caribbean, South America, Europe, the Middle East, the Soviet Union, Africa (Nairobi), India and Pakistan. New destinations added in 1989 were Albuquerque, Denver, Fort Lauder dale, Kansas City, Philadelphia, San Juan, Antigua, Grand Cayman and Koln. The airline is the largest operator at New York (JFK). After losing its Pacific division, Pan Am has concentrated on expanding its transatlantic services. The company also operates a domestic network of sched uled services to over 50 locations. Pan Am Shuttle was formed in 1987 as a separate division to operate high- frequency services on the New York (LaGuardia) to Boston and Washington routes. A network of local services in West Germany is also operated. History: Pan Am was formed in 1927. Considerable postwar international route expansion took place, so that by the 1960s Pan Am had an extensive worldwide network of services. During 1979 the Metropolitan Air Facilities division (general-aviation services), the Aerospace Ser vices division (support for Kennedy Space Center missile activities) and the Airline Services division (airline and airport technical and management assistance) were merged into Pan Am World Services, with headquarters at the Pan Am Building in New York City. In 1979 Pan Am was the USA's second-largest airline after acquiring a majority stockholding in National Airlines of Miami. Full integration of the two airlines was implemented following the 1980 summer season. In February 1986 the company sold its entire Pacific division to United Airlines. Pan Am acquired Ransome Airlines in April 1986, which began services the followingjune as "Pan Am arlos Birabe oviding feeder traffic to the carrier's New York hub. Pan Am Express, known as Ransome Airlines until 1986, operates feeder services to Pan Am's main route system at New York (JFK and LaGuardia) and West Berlin (Tegel). A total of 14 destinations in the USA and Canada are served from New York, and 12 from West Berlin (Bremen, Dortmund, Hannover, Kiel, Basle, Strasbourg, Zurich, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm). History: Ransome Airlines began operations in March 1967. Its association with the Allegheny Commuter system, which began in August 1970, ended in June 1982. Between May 1984 and April 1986 the airline operated in association with Delta under the "Delta Connection" banner. Ransome was bought by Pan Am in April 1986 and 'Pan Am Express' operations began the followingjune. Fleet: ten DHC Dash 7, eight ATR42-300. On order: three ATR42-300. Paramount Airways, the Bristol-based charter operator ceased operations on 2 November, 1989, and entered receivership. Paramount Airways is a British charter carrier which operates inclusive-tour passenger services from the UK to major Mediterranean, European and Canary Island holi day resorts. History: The company was launched in October 1986 and operations started in April 1987. In November 1988 the company acquired the assets of Amber Air, which had been formed in 1987. In August 1989 the company entered administration and operations were scaled down from November. Fleet: one Boeing 737-300.
