PEOPLE FRENCH ASTRONAUTS TO START MIR TRAINING French astronauts Michel Tognini (right) and Jean-Pierre Haignere are shortly to begin training at Star City near Moscow for a mission to the Soviet Mir space station in the middle oj 1992. One oj the two astronauts will be selected jor the Mir mission. The team will fly in a Soyuz spacecraft and spend 12 days on Mir. DDC-I Charles Boyer is the new east ern regional field sales engineer of DDC-I's Richmond, Virginia office. Boyer was previously a sales engineer with Data I/O Corporation, Virginia and east ern regional sales manager with EESOF, Maryland. Shaun O'Reilly FLIGHT DIRECTORS Len Barnsdale has been made Finan cial Director of air brokerage and airline sales company, Flight Directors. He has been with the company for three years and was previously with Barclays Bank and Owners Abroad. Shaun O'Reilly, who has been with the company since it started in 1984, is pro moted to Sales Director. GALILEO Maurice Maher has been pro moted to vice-president, Opera tions, for the global computer travel information system, Gali leo. Maher joined the European- based company in 1988 and was appointed general manager, Ap plications, in 1990. He formerly worked for Saudi Arabian Air lines and Aer Lingus. Maher replaces Jack Dickson who re tires on 30 January, 1991. His appointment will be effective from 1 January, 1991. Mike Stout has also been promoted to vice-president, Production De velopment. Stout joined Galileo in January 1989 and has held several positions in United Air lines and Covia. He replaces Hans Eisele, who is returning to Swiss Air on 30 June, 1991. His appointment will be effective from 1 April, 1991. WAEA Mark Horton, media services manager for British Airways, will serve as president of the World Airline Entertainment Association (WAEA) for the 1990-1 term. Horton joined BA in 1978 and has been responsi ble for ' co-ordinating inflight entertainment. He will play a key role in planning the 1991 WAEA Annual Conference in London. Carol Gregoire, in flight entertainment and ameni ties manager for Air Canada, was elected WAEA vice-presi dent. Gregoire joined Air Can ada as a flight attendant in 1971. FAA AWARDS Sandra Provenzano of Houston, Texas, has been named 1990 General Aviation Flight Instruc tor of the Year by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and general aviation industry. Provenzano is president of Avia tion Training Consultants, which she founded in 1983, and is an FAA Accident Prevention Counsellor. The award will be presented at a ceremony at the FAA HQ on 31 October, 1990. RAF Sqn Ldr Adrian Thurley has been appointed as the new head of the Royal Air Force's forma tion fliers, The Red Arrows. Thurley, who first flew with the team in 1986, comes from New market, Suffolk. Joining Thurley are three new team members: Fit Lt Simon Meade, Fit Lt Gordon Howes and Fit Lt Neil Rogers. COOPER Nikki Russ is the new director of Purchasing for Cooper Avia tion Industries, an aircraft parts distributor based in Chicago, Illinois. Russ has been in pur chasing for more than sixteen years and will be responsible for overseeing Purchasing and Cus tomer Services. AER LINGUS Derek Byrne has been ap pointed to the new position of general manager, Europe, for Ireland's national airline, Aer Lingus. He will be based at the Dublin head office, with respon sibility for shorthaul passenger services and marketing. Byrne was previously Aer Lingus' re gional marketing manager for Britain and Continental Europe and has held management posi tions in Stockholm, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. it* Brian Tucker GEC AVIONICS Brian Tucker takes over from William Alexander as managing director of GEC Avionics. He has been with the company for 20 years and was appointed assistant general manager in 1988, followed by promotion to assistant managing director in 1989. Alexander continues as deputy managing director of GEC Marconi. BRITISH AIR FERRIES Barry Stone is the new manag ing director of Engineering for Southend-based charter and avi ation engineering group, British Air Ferries. He was formerly assistant managing director of Field Aircraft where he was responsible for maintenance and military conversion pro grammes. Tony Eastern BUSINESS & LEISURE Tony Eastern has founded a new aviation and marine man agement charter, sales and con sultancy company, Business and Leisure, based in the UK at Wimborne, Dorset.
