The principal combat unit is the Escuadron de Caza-Bombardo at San Jose, which uses A-37B Dragonflies, possibly supplemented by three T- 37Cs. During the last period of tension over Belize an A-37 detachment was deployed to Flores in the north of the country. Also tasked with COIN and light strike duties are the PC-7 Turbo-Trainers based at Santa Elena. Guatemala received 12 PC-7s in 1978/9, and the remainder are used for training at Guatemala City-Los Cipresales, alongside T-33As. At Guatemala City-La Aurora, the Escuadron de Transporte uses a mixed fleet of largely obsolete aircraft, although an order for two Aeritalia G.222s was placed in late 1989. There is also a large fleet of some 20 single-engined Cessna light aircraft for liaison and communications. A Super King Air 200 is used as a VIP transport. There is also an Air Force Reserve consisting of a number of civil aircraft, such as Beech Duchesses, which are claimed to be armed with machine-guns and light bombs. A handful of MiG- 19s has also been reported in service, while the status of the training fleet remians uncertain. The transport fleet is supplemented by the airliners operated by the national airline, Air Guinee, which are available for occasional military use. Turboprop- powered SF.260s remain in use but the entire fleet of four S.211 jet trainers was sold in the USA in April 1990. The remainder of the inventory com prises a miscellany of transport and liaison types, the last helicopters having been sold in 1988. US aid has allowed the upgrading of a number of airfields. After consis tently denying repeated requests for F-5E/F Tiger lis, the US Government finally agreed to supply a dozen ex-USAF aircraft. The first two arrived at La Ceiba 1987 and the rest were in service by the end of 1988. The Sabres are based at San Pedro Sula, while the Super Mysteres are located at La Ceiba, with a dual air-defence/attack role. At least 20 Super Mysteres were received between 1976 and 1982, but of the survivors only a dozen or so are generally servicea ble at any one time. Also based at La Ceiba is the A-37B unit, while the transport and communica tions fleet is concentrated at Tegucigalpa-Tocontin. Training is carried out by the Military Aviation Academy at Comayagua using a T-41, EMB-312 Tucano, CASA C.101 Aviojet sequence. Two Super King Airs are in service equipped with forward-looking infra-red: (FLIR) sensors to provide day and night search capability. Four T-67Ms are used for basic pilot training and an Islander is retained for multi-engine conversion. Three Arriel-powered S-76A+ utility helicopters entered service in July 1990, allowing the disposal of three SA.365C Dauphins. Three more S-76A+ scheduled for delivery in November 1990 are spe cially equipped with GEC TICM II FLIR and Honeywell automatic approach/hover system for SAR duties. Two utility configured S-76Cs will follow in 1991 and options are held on four more.
