OPERATIONS: DEFENCE Dotan returns 'bribe' to Israeli Government Asum of S7 million, allegedly paid as a bribe to Gen Rami Dotan, the Israeli Air Force's (IAF) former chief of engineer ing and logistics, has been re turned to the Israeli ministry of defence. The arrangement forms part of a deal being discussed be tween the IAF officer and the Israeli Defence Forces' chief at torney's office. Dotan allegedly received $10 million as a bribe from suppliers of equipment to the IAF. The outstanding $3 million will also be returned under the proposed deal. The extent of the affair (Flight International, 7-13 No vember, 1990, P 13), shocked the IAF command. According to the allegations, Dotan and a number of associates were in volved in a scheme to receive huge sums of money from sup pliers of equipment and systems to the IAF. Harold Katz, another suspect in the affair, is said to have co-operated with the in vestigators and was instru mental in arranging the transfer of the $7 million sum from banks in Europe and the USA back to Israel. United States authorities" have asked for de tails about the investigation in a bid to uncover the ties be tween US companies and Dotan. The third person arrested was Yoram Ingbir, who owns an equipment company which sup plied the IAF. • MAVERICK 'G' CHECKED OUT The US Air Force has completed qualification operational test and evaluation of the new 150kg blast/penetration warhead AGM-65G model Hughes Maverick air-to-surface missile. In tests at Eglin AFB, nine of the first ten production infra-red-guided G-model Mavericks scored direct hits in launches from F-4Es, F-16Cs and F-lllFs. Previous variants of Maverick have a 75kg shaped-charge warhead. Belgians solve Hercules mid-life crisis The Belgian Air Force's 12 Lockheed C-130 Hercules are to undergo a mid-life update to give them another 20 years service life. Under the five-year pro gramme, two aircraft at a time will be upgraded by Sabena Teenies, the Belgian national airline's maintenance subsidiary at Brussels airport. Fitting a new wing, developed by Lockheed in 1984, will be the major modification. This should overcome problems with corrosion, metal fatigue and fuel leaks now being experienced by the aircraft. The upgrade also covers re placement of flight controls and associated instrumentation. The aircraft will receive new flight controls, an inertial navigation system, a global positioning sys tem and new communications equipment. All aircraft are to receive an electronic flight in strumentation system and a flight management system. The present fuel gauges will be re placed by digital displays and all the aircraft will have new cargo handling equipment. A new grey colour scheme will replace the present green and sand- brown camouflage. • FIRST SOUTH KOREAN BLACK HAWK DELIVERED Sikorsky has delivered the first of 100 UH-60P Black Hawks for the South Korean Army to Korean Air, which will build the type under licence. The baseline aircraft is the US Army's UH-60L model with l,445kW (l,940shp) General Electric T700-701C engines and an improved main gearbox. Israel enters UAV competition Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) has delivered one of two un manned aerial vehicles (UAV) for a US Army competition to select a short-range UAV. The joint improved multi- mission payload aerial surveil lance combat survivable system (JIMPACS) airframe was deliv ered in Israel to representatives of the US UAV project. The engine has been deliv ered to the Naval Air Propulsion Center at Trenton, New Jersey. IAI has teamed with TRW to compete for a potential market of $400 million-700 million. The US Army plans to purchase 30 UAV systems, the configura tion of which will determine the total value of the contract. The JIMPACS system was de veloped by Malat, IAI's un manned vehicles subsidiary, and had its first flight on 30 Septem ber. Two systems will be deliv ered to the USA. These will compete in March, 1991, against an upgraded version of the McDonnell Douglas/Devel opmental Sciences R4E-50 Skyeye. Selection of the winner is expected in September. • FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 2 - 8 January, 1991 ')
