World Airways closed down all of its scheduled services, which accounted for the bulk of operations, in Septem ber 1986, and now concentrates on worldwide passenger and cargo charters and of overhauls at its Oakland base. A merger of Yemenia and Alyemda, following North and South Yemen's unity into a single Yemen Republic in May 1990, is still under discussion and is being further delayed by the Gulf war. Yemen Airways operates domestic scheduled passenger and cargo services from Sana'a to Taiz, Hodeidah, Albuque, Aden and Riyan, together with international routes to Djibouti, Bahrain, Doha, Jeddah, Sharjah, Dhahran, Khartoum, Addis Ababa, Abu Dhabi, Karachi, Damascus, Cairo, Rome, London (Gatwick), Amsterdam, Istanbul, Moscow, Frankfurt, Larnaca, Bombay, Amman, Paris and Riyadh. During the crisis in the Gulf Baghdad and Kuwait routes are suspended. History: The company, formed in 1963 as the national airline under the title Yemen Airlines, was reorganised and retitled Yemen Airways Corporation in September 1972, following nationalisation. The present name was adopted on 1 July, 1978, following the joint establish ment early in 1977 of a new airline by the governments of the Yemen Arab Republic, now Republic of Yemen, and Saudi Arabia, holding 51% and 49% respectively of the capital. History: The company was formed in September 1967 as a wholly-owned Government airline. Technical and managerial assistance was provided initially by Alitalia and, from 1974, by Aer Lingus. In March 1982, Ethiopian Airlines entered into a three-year operation and technical support agreement with Zambia. In May 1978, the company received authority to operate general cargo charters throughout the USA. In February 1980, Zantop ex panded scheduled services significantly and in 1980 purchased the Air Cargo division of Hawaiian Airlines, based at Macon-Bibb County Airport, Georgia.
