PEOPLE YAKOVLEV MEANS BUSINESS ON YAK-58 Chiej designer Sergi Yahovlev is predicting a "tremendous demand" for the Yalovlev Design Bureau's six-seater business aircraft, the Yak-58. He says first deliveries for the ducted-pusher-propeller-configured aircraft will commence in 1993. ALAN MANN Pierre Freullet has joined Mann Aviation Sales as senior sales manager. He was previously with British Aerospace Com mercial Aircraft. Graham Reith has returned to Falcon Jet Cen tre as senior sales manager. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS William Hayes has been pro moted to vice-president and president of TI's Defense Sys tems & Electronics Group (DSEG). He was formerly exec utive vice-president and deputy- manager of DSEG. He replaces Bill Mitchell, executive vice- president and former DSEG pre sent, who will head Tl's systems and equipment sector business. UK CAA The Rt Hon Christopher Chata- way has been appointed chair man of the Civil Aviation Au thority (CAA). His five-year term will begin on 1 June, although he joined the CAA Board as a non-executive board member on 1 April. He succeeds Sir Christopher Tugendhat. Ap pointed to the new post of director-general of policy and planning with the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) is AVM Mike Gibson. He is current director of control (airspace policy). He will lake up his position on I June following the retirement of the deputy con troller NATS, Ronald Toseland. EOSAT The executive committee of Earth Observation Satellite, a General Electric and Hughes Aircraft joint venture, has named Dr Jay Buckley, of GE Astro Space, as interim presi dent and David Edwards, of Hughes Aircraft, as interim executive vice-president. The appointments follow resigna tions by senior executives, C P Williams and Peter Norris. ISRAELI DEFENCE FORCES Gen Ehud Barak has been ap pointed the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) Chief of General Staff. He becomes the 14th chief of general staff of the IDF, and has served in many IDF elite units. He believes in "a smaller but smarter army" and will have to solve the severe problems caused by the defence budget cuts. At the same time he is expected to push the develop ment and deployment of ad vanced smart weapon systems. BELGIAN AIR FORCE Ll Gen Guido Vanhecke has become chief of staff of the Belgian Air Force. He succeeds Lt Gen Alexander Moriau who is retiring. The chief of opera tions and second in command is now Maj Gen Wilfried De Brouwer. USAIR Lawrence Pickett has been ap pointed to the new position of USAir assistant vice-president — corporate communications for the Southeastern Region. Agnes Huff is named Western Region manager — corporate communications. She previously- served as a corporate com munications representative for USAir in Los Angeles. PAL Philippine Airlines has an nounced the appointment of Catalino Macaraig as chairman. He was previously executive se cretary. Feliciano Belmonte is named as president and chief executive officer and will also continue as president and gen eral manager of the majority stock holder in PAL, the Gov ernment Services Insurance Sys tem. He replaces Dante Santos. GALILEO Spearheading a sales drive into the Spanish market will be Julio de Andres, the newly appointed Galileo Espana manager. Head ing a team of six, his responsi bility is to establish Galileo in Spain as an alternative to other computerised reservation and information systems. RAYTHEON Christoph Hoffmann 'will be come secretary and general counsel of Raytheon on I July, replacing senior vice-president, Charles Resnick, who is retir ing. He was previously with Pneumo Abex. BEECHCRAFT Dr William Edgington will be come vice-president — T-l pro gramme following the retire- Dr William Edgington ment of Donald Wells effective on 1 June. He was formerly director — Joint Primary Air craft Training System. FAIRCHILD Hector Cuellar has been pro moted to president of Fairchild's recently created Gov ernment Programs division. The division was established in re sponse to an increase in govern ment business with the award ing of the C-26 Mission Support Aircraft Programme. He was previously senior vice-president.
