PARIS FIRST NEWS present GE engine. So, if we got the engine and the other mods, we could have a pretty good interdiction aircraft into the 21st century. We're currently work ing up a set of requirements with the air force for what will be a 30-year aircraft." Other upgrades include stronger wheel brakes — with a brake-parachute malfunction F- 117A pilots need more than 3,000m (10,000ft) to roll out without overheating the older brakes — new multipur pose colour displays and a moving map. The 56-strong F-117A fleet is being retrofitted with new verti cal fins to expand the flight envelope back to its original top speed. The envelope is restricted on non-retrofitted aircraft be cause of a flutter problem expe rienced with the original unit. The structural box of the new fin is made of a composite thermoplastic, with plastic surrounds mounted on a steel spindle. D Fokker/TAT will hushkit F.28 Fellowship Fokker and French airline TAT have announced an up grade programme for the F.28 Fellowship, intended to stretch in-service life by up to 15 years. The upgrade hinges around a Stage Ill-compliant hushkit being specially-developed for the RB.183 turbofan by Rolls-Royce. Although plans for the kit are not yet finalised, they are likely to include a modified inlet with an improved liner and an inter nal mixer. Both are under con sideration for a Spey Mk511-8 hushkit which Rolls-Royce and Gulfstream are working on to gether for the Gulfstream 11/111. Under the Gulfstream/Rolls- Royce plan, the US company will develop an ejector-type noise- suppression system and Rolls- ROGERSON'S SEVEN-SEATER Rogerson Hiller is under taking a study of a seven- seat development of its Model 1100. Aimed at competing in the Bell 206L LongRanger III mar ket, the RH-1100S will be powered by the Allison 250-C20B. The company hopes to bring the new variant to certification within three years. Royce will design and manufac ture an engine nozzle which, in conjunction with the ejector, will enable a demonstrator to be available at the end of 1992. The first F.28 hushkits are "...targeted to be available by late 1993", according to the Fokker schedule, which also in volves a substantial package of airframe modifications. This in cludes a wing drag-reduction kit, comprising wingtip devices (vortex diffusers), anti-shock micro-generators and flow- separation suppressors in the engine stubwing (pylon) area. The drag-reduction devices will compensate for the additional drag of the hushkit. Fokker estimates the cost of the package will amount to some $2.5 million an aircraft. TAT, which operates 22 F.28s, will be the first to install the modifications. D FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 19 - 25 June, 1991 13
