SPACEFLIGHT Soviets plan major event The Soviets are planning a space spectacular next year involving the Buran space shut tle, Mir space station and a new version of the manned Soyuz TM ferry. The plans were re vealed by Yuri Semenov, general designer of NPO Energia. After a new crew has been launched to Mir, probably on Soyuz TM15 later in 1992, the Buran space shuttle will be launched, unmanned, on a flight to the space station. It will dock automatically at one of the ports at the end of the Kristall space factory module. The TM15 cosmonauts will man Buran and operate its remote manipulator to demonstrate the shuttle's ability to deliver new modules or replace old ones and bring them back to Earth. The TM15 crew will return to Mir, and Buran will detach to perform a further automatic flight to await the arrival of the crew of Soyuz TM16, launched in a new version of the space craft which will dock with Buran. This crew will man Buran to demonstrate the spacecraft's ability to operate independently from Mir. The TM16 crew will return to their spacecraft which will fly to dock with Mir, while Buran makes automatic re-entry and return to the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The Soviet Government has also given the go-ahead for the 1992 launch of two new mod ules which will complete the Mir Space Station's configuration. These are called Priroda and Spekr, both designed for envi ronmental monitoring. • NEWS IN BRIEF ARIANE RESTART Commercial flights In Ariane is '.'.iii begin in mid-July after the two-month hiatus due to concerns ahoul the third stage, says-Charles Bigot, Ari- aaespace - chairman *aad chief executive officer. Italy and NASA to agree on module The Italian Space Agency and NASA are finalising a bi lateral agreement to allow Italy to build a logistics module for the initial configuration of the Freedom space station. The module would support the man-tended phase of the station in about 1996 until the NASA logistics module is in place at the permanently- manned stage after the year 2000. Italy is also proposing a mini- life sciences module to be at tached to Freedom. The agree ment is expected to be ratified later this year. • Alenia (Selenia Spazio) has entered into an agreement with MBB-Deutsche Aerospace to work on the Phase A study of propulsion systems proposed for use by the German-designed Saenger spaceplane. • giving top performance.
