COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT OF THE WORLD Programme status: 70 built since 1984, in production. CHINA Shanghai Aviation Industry (SAIC) 3115 Chang Zhong Lu, Shanghai Municipality, People's Republic of China. Tel: 681872; Telex: 01-33136 SHAIR BCN. The Chinese Government has approved a 20- aircraft extension for co-production of MDC MD-80 twin-jet airliners by SAIC. The new agreement brings China's total orders for MD-82s to 50, of which 45 have been or will be built in China. The new order continues co-production into 1994. The aircraft are built from sub-assemblies and components from MDCs Long Beach factory. SAIC also manufactures MD-80 parts in Shanghai and Chengdu, both for its own aircraft assembly and for supply to the Long Beach assembly line. FAA approval was given in 1988 for production assembly, production flight-testing, and manufac ture of parts and subassemblies. SAIC has ten offset programmes for manufac ture of MD-80 landing gear; cargo, service and NOTES With the exceptions of altitudes quoted in feet (1ft = 0.3m) and speeds in knots (nautical miles per hour — lkt = 1.85km/ h), metric measure is used as follows; lkN = 2251b; lkW = 1.34hp/shp; lm2 = 10.76ft2; 1kg = 2.21b; 1 litre =^0.264 US gal, 0.22 Imp gal; 1 km = 0.54n'm. KEY TO THE DATA TABLES Aircraft entries are arranged in alphabetical order by manufacturer name, then by increasing aircraft capacity. The data tables of this directory provide the vital statistics of all the turbofan-powered transport air craft in, or proposed for, series production or modernisation, with more than 50 seats, plus the turboprop-powered Lockheed L- 100 Series civil Hercules because of its capacity. They also contain data on certain aircraft, like the Boeing 727 (given a new lease of life by the re-engining program mes), DC-10, Tristar and DC-8-70 which, although no longer built, are classics of their kind and may be of interest to potential purchasers of used types. The data contained in the tables is as accurate as possible. It has been compiled to allow readers to make broad compari sons. Nevertheless, it is inevitable that certain inconsistencies remain among types and manufacturers. This is particularly true for the material on Eastern Bloc types, where details are not always freely availa ble. Care must be taken in making compari sons for another reason. Within each model there can be a multiplicity of sub-types depending on the specification agreed between the original customer air- nose access doors; and horizontal stabiliser and inboard flap roller box assemblies. MDC, CATIC and the People's Republic of China (PRC) airlines are currently discussing joint development and possible joint venture production of aircraft for the PRC's trunk airliner programme, under which up to 150 new aircraft will be acquired by China. The aircraft would be based on the MD-90 twin-jet series being developed by MDC for service in late 1994. SAIC employs 10,000 workers and comprises: the Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Factory; Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute; Shanghai Aeroengine Manufacturing Factory; and Shanghai Far East Aerotechnology. SAIC has delivered 12 of 25 ordered MD-82s from its Shanghai production line to CAAC since 1987 and two more are ready for delivery soon. Two UK-based companies were to market revised Rombac One-Elevens, ending long speculation about the future of the project to licence-build the BAe aircraft in Romania. line and the manufacturer. Most types are available with options covering engines, weights, doors, interior furnishing, cockpit fit and fuel capacity. This is particularly important for airlines looking to the used aircraft market to top up their existing fleets. Will the aircraft they buy have the same specification and performance as the model they operate already? It is also important for companies attempting to assess market values of used equipment, for which they require the aircraft's mainte nance and overhaul record as well as its modification status. DATA TABLES Powerplant Number of engines and nominal sea-level ISA static power of each (kN thrust, kW eshp), manufacturer and type. Earlier mod els may have offered lower power ratings. Undercarriage Dimensions are in metres. Accommodation Maximum seating capacity is for all- economy or inclusive-tour layout (not necessarily typical of how airlines use the capacity), with maximum number of seats abreast and minimum pitch. Capacity may be constrained by exit requirements. Care must be exercised when interpreting these numbers. Also given are baggage and freight hold total volume and number of compartments and aircraft operating pres sure differential. Weight Maximum permit ted weights for taxiing (ramp), take-off, landing and zero fuel; operational weight empty for all-tourist-class layout or FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 4 - 10 September, 1991
