DEFENCE surplus work would be required, there would be little opportunity for Turkish industry to participate in the programme. Turkey's Tusas Aerospace Industries has an agreement to license manufacture the CN- 235, however. Another option being considered, is to convert at least six CN-235s to fulfil the MPA role. The mission system avionics and search radar would be likely to be sourced off-the- shelf, with integration being carried out in Turkey, accord ing to industry officials. With a considerable differ ence in capability between the P-3, CN-235, and S-2, Turkey's final choice of aircraft may hinge as much on financial criteria as on operational needs. P Racal bids for Canadian ESM system Following its success in being chosen to supply the Orange Reaper electronic support meas ures (ESM) system for the Royal Navy's Merlin ASW helicopter, Racal Radar Defence Systems (RRDS) is bidding to be the ESM supplier for Canada's proposed New Shipboard Aircraft (NSA). Based on the company's Kes trel equipment, a total of 44 Orange Reaper sets are being procured by the Royal Navy. A formal evaluation of the system — conducted aboard a Pilatus Britten-Norman Defender — was completed during the first week of September 1991. Further UK orders could be forthcoming if the Royal Navy's desire to update the ESM capa bilities of its Sea King AEW 2s results in a formal requirement. The basic Kestrel equipment covers the C- through J-band frequency spread and provides full 360° coverage in azimuth. Direction-finding accuracy is claimed to be "better than" 5° RMS (root mean2). The system uses six antenna modules and a receiver chain which incorpo rates, among others, superheter odyne and digital instantaneous frequency measuring units. Soft ware driven (2,000 mode li brary), the system weighs about 55kg and is, according to RRDS, effective against continuous wave and "all types" of pulsed emitters. For a potential Canadian order, RRDS is teamed with Lockheed-Canada and is in di rect competition with IBM and its AN/ALR-76 system. Best and final offers for 35 ESMs to equip the ASW variant of the NSA are due in the next few days following confirmation that the helicopter programme has survived the Canadian Gov ernment defence review (Flight International, 25 September-1 October). Lt Col Ian Ross, deputy NSA project manager characterises the Canadian requirement as having changed with the passage of time from a specification which "stretched the state-of- the-art" to a requirement which is for an essentially off-the-shelf system. Kestrel and ALR-76 have been under test for some time in Canada and both systems were deployed by the Canadian Forces during the Gulf War aboard HMCS Protecteur and Athabaskan respectively. Sources say that the Canadians experi enced initial software difficulties with ALR-76 although these were resolved by the company. The NSA is set to operate from patrol frigates and destroyers, replacing CH-124A Sea Kings, a C-212 NON-STOPWORK, UPTO DATE In a class of its own. This is the only 26-seater of its kind on the market today. Capable of landing and take off on the shorter of unpaved runways, the C-212 is always working flat out Its breadth of experience in the harshest of conditions and its special characteristics make this a tough, reliable plane with minimal maintenance requirements, and ease of adaptability for a multitude of different operations. As a passenger plane it is equipped to cover all possible necessities to the highest requirements of space and comfort As an airfreighter the C-212 not only comes equipped with a wider cabin with space for up to 3 LD3 containers, but also its rear ramp enables it to load cargos no other plane with a similar loading capacity could ever hope to do. The G-2I2, when it comes to doing business it's in a class of its own. PLANE PERFECTION CONSTRUCCIONESAERONAUTICAS, S.A Rey Francisco, 4. 28008 MADRID (SPAIN). Telephone 248 53 09. Telefax 542 48 16.
