^ •A\ GRADUALLYI GLOBAL Singapore Aerospace is moving away from its traditional reliance on defence business and aims to become a global player in commercial maintenance and manufacturing, as John Bailey reports. A lthough Singapore Aerospace (SAe) is not given to chest- thumping declarations of abil ity or intent, the company is overcoming its characteristic reticence. The reason is the need for visibility generated by its measured expansion into the commercial arena, a gradual process which should see SAe deriving half its revenues from commercial inter ests by the middle of the decade. For a company originally established primarily to provide maintenance support for the ..Singapore Armed Forces, the cultural transformation has been profound. Francis Yuen, assistant vice-president for corporate affairs and business devel opment, explains: "We have a three- point strategy for expanding the business. The first is strategic alliances, the second is the acquisition of facilities or assets where there is a synergy with our core business in Singapore...and ventures overseas to establish a presence in those markets."
