WORLD AIRLINE DIRECTORY of the Kingdom and the largest carrier in the Middle East. The airline operates scheduled passenger and cargo services to 24 domestic and 51 international destina tions. Scanair is an independent charter airline within the SAS group and operates contract charter and inclusive-tour flights from Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmo, Oslo and Copenhagen to destinations in Europe, Africa, the USA and the West Indies. History: Scariair was formed on 30 June, 1961, as a Danish charter company. On 1 October, 1965, the company was re-organised as a Scandinavian charter consortium owned by ABA (Swedish Airlines), DDL (Danish Airlines) and DNL (Norwegian Airlines) in the proportion 3:2:2. Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) is the designated national carrier of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The airline has developed a global network of marketing and traffic alliances. In December, a 24.9% shareholding was acquired in Airlines of Britain Holdings, parent company of British Midland. In the same month, SAS signed a letter of intent with All Nippon Airlines to operate joint services between Japan and Scandinavia. In October 1988, the company announced the establishment of a partnership with Continental Airlines parent Texas Air, with SAS acquiring a 10% equity interest in the US company. These alliances added to those already estab lished with Thai Airways (providing the carrier with a hub at Bangkok) and Varig (providing access to a network of services in South America). Routes: An extensive network of Scandinavian and European scheduled passenger and cargo services is operated, together with a large network of routes to Africa, the Near, Middle and Far East and North and South America. On 30 March, 1992, the carrier, in partnership with Austrian Airlines, will begin a non-stop service between Copenhagen and Chicago. History: The owners of SAS are, in the proportion of 2:2:3, Det Danske Luftfartselskap (Danish Airlines), Det Norske Luftfartselskap (Norwegian Airlines) and Aero- transport (Swedish Airlines). These three limited compa nies are owned 50% by private individuals or enterprises and 50% by their respective national governments. SAS was formed in 1946 to operate scheduled transatlantic services. All routes of the three airlines are operated by SAS. Subsidiaries: Wholly owned subsidiaries are SAS Service Partner (catering and offshore services), SAS International Hotels, SAS Information and Reservation System and SAS Leisure. Scanair is an associate com pany, owned jointly by ABA, DDL and DNL, which operates charter and inclusive-tour services. Other air lines in which SAS has an interest are Danair (57%), Linjeflyg (50%), Greenlandair (50%), Helikopter Service (5%), Wideroe (22%), Spanair (49%) and Texas Air (9.9%). Schreiner Airways, of the Netherlands, operates a large fleet of fixed-wing passenger aircraft and helicopters on behalf of leading airlines, as well as international oil companies worldwide. SAMCO, Schreiner's maintenance organisation, also provides third-party maintenance at Maastricht. The Schreiner Air Training School and the Friendship Simulation Centre — a joint venture with KLM — all based at Maastricht Airport, train airline pilots. Schreiner also trains Royal Netherlands Air Force fighter pilots at Woensdrecht airbase, using Pilatus PC-7s. History: The company was founded by B A M Schreiner in 1945 as an aviation trading company. A professional pilots' training school was started in 1968. In August 1982, KLM and several Dutch finance and insurance companies took up portions of Schreiner shares. Scibe Airlift of Zaire, the largest carrier in Zaire, provides scheduled and charter passenger and cargo services from its base at Kinshasa to points in Zaire. Worldwide cargo services are also operated. History: The company was formed in 1979. Seagreen Air Transport has operated cargo charter services in the Caribbean area since 1964. After a period of inactivity, the company was restructured in 1987 and operates passenger and cargo charters, using a de Havilland Twin Otter and a McDonnell Douglas DC-3, from its Antigua base. Worldwide cargo charters are operated from Seagreen's Ostend, Belgium, base, with frequent services to Caracas, Barbados, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Mexico. Holiday passenger charters have been planned for 1992, using a Boeing 707. Fleet: three Boeing 707-320C, one 704-320B, one McDonnell Douglas DC-3, one de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter.
