PEOPLE Barbara Marrs GULFSTREAM Barbara Marrs has been ap pointed director of human re sources at Gulfstream Aerospace Technologies. Marrs has been with Gulfstream since 1980, most recently as manager of human resources. Dennis Walden has been named vice- president/general manager of the Long Beach, California, site. Walden was previously director of completions operations. NBAA John Olcott, vice-president/ group publisher of McGraw-Hill, has been appointed president of the National Business Aircraft Association (NBAA), with effect from 15 May. Dennis Wright is appointed corporate secretary, succeeding Dorothy Cheek, who has retired. Wright has been with the NBAA since 1984 and was most recently the associa tion's vice-president of opera tions. William Fanning is promoted to senior technical ad visor, supervising NBAA op erations staff technical managers as well as taking responsibility for some operations projects. He was previously manager of tech nical services. David Ryan is promoted to manager of techni cal services. He will report to Fanning, in preparation for tak ing over responsibility for air frames and powerplants. Ryan will also edit the NBAA's Mainte nance and Operations Bulletin as well as handling staff liaison for the NBAA's technical committee, which numbers 60 personnel. THORN EMI Colin How has been appointed as operations director for the UK's Thorn EMI Electronics De fence Group. He will take responsibility for materials man agement, industrial test ingi- neering and inspection at the company's Feltham and Hayes sites. How was previously with Smiths Industries. BRITISH AEROSPACE Richard Lapthorne is to join the board of British Aerospace in July as director of finance. His present position is group finance director of Courtaulds. Lapthorne's appointment follows that of John Cahill as chairman of BAe (Flight International, 29 April-5 May, P 5). AIR MALTA Flag-carrier Air Malta has ap pointed Joseph Tabone as its chairman. He takes over from Albert Mizzi, who has been chairman since the airline's in ception in 1973. Tabone was previously chairman of the Bank of Valletta Group. MIL DESIGN BUREAU The Russian helicopter design bureau, Mil, has appointed Mark Vainberg as its general designer and manager. Vainberg, previ ously deputy chief designer for the military Mi-28 Havoc's de velopment, replaces Marat Tis- chenko, who has resigned. MESSIER-BUGATTI Alain Richard has been named president of Messier-Bugatti's military landing gear and hy draulics division. He replaces Jacques Paul, who is to take on other responsibilities within the group. Richard has been with the company since 1971, most recently as head of the logistics and overhaul division. UNILED AIRLINES J C Pope has been appointed president and chief operating officer for United Airlines. Pope, with the airline since 1988, was most recently vice-chairman and chief financial officer. James Goodwin has been appointed senior vice-president - interna tional of United's newly estab lished international division. He was previously senior vice- president - maintenance opera tions. James Brennan, formerly regional vice-president Japan, becomes vice-president - Pacific north and Don Curran, previ ously general manager - Hong Kong, is appointed vice-presi dent - Pacific south. CANADA Vice Adm John Anderson has been appointed Vice Chief of the Defence Staff for Canadian Na tional Defence. He will be based at National Defence headquar ters in Ottawa, and replaces Lt Gen Fred Sutherland, who is due for retirement. Rear Adm Peter Cairns is promoted to Vice Admiral, and will replace Ander son as Commander Maritime Command in Halifax. Maj Gen Paul Addy is appointed Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, Intel ligence, Security and Operations at National Defence headquar ters. Brig Gen Lew Mackenzie is to be promoted to Major General and will be appointed Com mander Land Forces Central Area in Toronto. James Press TOYOTA James Press has been named president of Toyota Aviation's US division. He was most re cently senior vice-president and assistant general manager of Southeast Toyota, one of two private US distributors of Toyota vehicles. Press will oversee Toy ota's growing aviation opera tions, which include sales and service of aircraft from AirFlite, a fixed-base operation in Long Beach, California, where Toyota Aviation will also be located. 36 FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 20-26 May 1992
