BERLIN SHOW REPORT Grob tests highlight exhaust problem Initial flight tests of the Grob GF200 pusher business air craft reveal that the aircraft has better-than-expected perform ance, but suffers from excessive exhaust noise. Grob says the GF200, seen for the first time at the show, is attracting "a lot of interest" from potential customers throughout Europe. The aircraft will cost about DM445,000 ($283,000) when it is available in mid-1994. According to Grob small air craft manager Heinz Micheler, the GF200 has demonstrated "better than brochure" perform ance in the 55h of flight testing carried out to date. A new maxi mum cruising speed of 197kt (365km/h) is being quoted, and take-off weight has increased slightly, to 1,600kg. The main problem revealed so far is overheating of the Lycom ing IO-540 engine, which is GF200 — pushing noise beyond buried in the fuselage behind the passenger cabin. "We changed the inlet design by reducing the five circumferential ports to a single inlet on the cabin roof," says Micheler. "That solved much of the problem — but we are still having trouble with the exhaust. He says he is "confi dent" of a solution before long. Flight testing has shown the GF200 to have "excel lent" climb and cruise perform ance, says Grob. "Low sensitivity' to cross- wind gusts and turbu lence is an other out standing feature, and the aircraft is very easy to take off and land." The GF200 will have a pres surised cabin eventually, and Grob has built a second fuselage for pressure and de-icing tests. "The initial aircraft will be cer tificated unpressurised," says Micheler. "We have not yet de cided how many seats the pres surised version should have." • the limit *v J "'EFKH »- • ^.™r--_j r^ .... ^ ,Aij£> #»« ~ £928 "——-^ n*v £/= 4*1,-™-*-—. _—™» *™-gl •. g.i; a»=t NEWS IN BRIEF IRYDA LOAN Rolls-Royce has signed a loan agreement with WSK PZL Mielec of Poland for the trial installation of the Viper 535 powerplant in the Iryda 1-22 twin-engined trainer. The air craft is powered by the Polish SQ-3W22 engine. "This pro ject is one of a number of re-engining possibilities in Eastern Europe," says R-R. EUROPEAN BEECH Beech Aircraft is to open an office in Munich in an effort to improve its sales and sup port effort for regional aircraft in Europe. The first Beech Aircraft 1900D to be exported to Europe is now with the company's distributor in Ger many — Beechcraft Sales and Service — for awaiting deliv ery to an unnamed German airline customer.
