PEOPLE Thomas Haack GENERAL DYNAMICS Thomas Haack has been named site director of the General Dy namics Space Systems division. He replaces Richard Gibb, who has moved to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station as division vice-president and site director for the company. Haack, with GD since 1989, has previously held positions with Pan Ameri can World Airways, Piper Air craft and Eagle International. Robert Dean BALL AEROSPACE Dr Robert Dean has been appointed to a newly created strategic-management position at the group headquarters of Ball Aerospace in Broomfield, Colo rado, with effect from 1 January, 1993. His responsibilities en compass strategic planning, in ternational business develop ment, mergers and acquisitions, strategic projects, advanced business development and Washington operations. Mark Weller is appointed the com pany's director of Washington operations and Government af fairs and Laurie Chiperfield be comes executive manager of Washington operations. CESSNA AIRCRAFT Ernest Edwards has been ap pointed sales manager for Cessna Aircraft's western divi sion, with responsibility for Ci tation business-jet sales in 24 western states. He will be based at Wichita, having served for seven years as regional manager for Citation sales in the UK, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Nigeria and the Middle East. Before that, Edwards was aviation manager for Cessna's representative in Saudi Arabia. MCDONNELL DOUGLAS John Tyson has been appointed to the newly created position of vice-president of defence sys tems at McDonnell Douglas, based in Washington DC. He will report to Thomas Culligan, vice-president of the company's Washington office. Bob Grace is named vice-president of US Gov ernment programmes, based in St Louis, Missouri. He will re port to Robert Trice, vice- president and general manager of business development. AMERICAN AIRLINES Jane Allen has been appointed vice-president for employee rela tions at American Airlines, re placing Ralph Craviso, who has resigned. Allen was previously managing director for compen sation and benefits in the air line's personnel resources department and, before that, she was a senior attorney in the airline's legal department. Dennis Lund AVTECH Dennis Lund has been ap pointed sales manager for avion ics-supplier Avtech's power and lighting group. Lund, with Avtech since 1987, was previ ously engineering section man ager for the company. GEC-MARCONI David Fletcher has been appointed deputv chairman of GEC-Marconi. He will be re sponsible for identifying new business strategies, particularly those involving collaboration be tween group ventures, and for furthering international joint ventures and partnerships. Roy ROYAL AIR FORCE PHOTOGRAPHIC AWARD Sgt Rick Brewell (right) received the Flight International award in the Royal Air Force's Photographic Competition for the best air-to-air picture oj 1992. The award was presented to Brewell at the RAF Museum at Hendon on 11 December. Gardner becomes the company's managing director. THE AIR LEAGUE Air Chief Marshal Sir Michael Knight has been appointed chairman of the UK's Air League, succeeding Michael Cobham. who retired on 31 December, 1992, and is now a life vice-president of the League. QANTAS Qantas' new group chief finan cial officer is Graham Jones, who entered the group from a background in financial services, retailing and hotels in Australia and Europe. Jones will be re sponsible for the group's contact with brokers, institutions and potential investors as the carrier prepares for the financial scru tiny of the domestic and interna tional investment community in the coming public float of the remaining 75% of Qantas. Tony Bushell DUNLOP Tony Bushell has been ap pointed sales manager at Dunlop Aircraft Tyres division, based at Fort Dunlop, Birmingham, in the UK. His responsibility will cover most of Europe and the north of England. RAFAEL Brig Gen (Ret) Itzhak Gat is the new president of Rafael, Israel's armament-development author ity. Gat, an aeronautical engi neer, served in the Israeli air force from 1967 and was com mander of an F-4 and then an F-16 squadron. In 1988, he as sumed command of the Israeli air force Ramat David base.
