Our reputation for innovation and engineering excellence extends amongst national and international clients. This is a key opportunity to join a specialist group developing innovative new solutions to airflow problems from a wide client base. These concern the whole spectrum of aerodynamic and thermo-fluids studies concerned with the operation of trains in open-air and tunnel environments and the associated problems of ambient wind effects, tunnel ventilation equipment cooling, etc. Studies associated with unsteady aerodynamics when trains pass each other and enter tunnels, and with train drag measurements may involve the use of existing novel test facilities at Derby and elsewhere, and also the development of CFD approaches. Strong possibilities exist for collaborative work with overseas railway groups. You should be an aerodynamics engineer or scientist with an honours degree and some experience in vehicle or aeronautical aerodynamics. You must be able to contribute sound practical fluids advice and an organizing ability for the carrying out of a highly varied and innovative programme of experimental and theoretical work. The benefits of a career with British Rail include free and reduced rate rail travel for you and your family both within the UK and overseas, together with an excellent index linked pension scheme (with existing rights transferable in most cases) and good opportunities for training and career progression.
