Australian Airlines (OS) and its subsidiary carriers operate an extensive network of scheduled, passenger and cargo services, linking state capital cities and many provincial towns. The airline is now wholly owned by Qantas Airways, which bought Australian Airlines on 14 September, 1992. British Airways has an agreement with the Australian Government to purchase 25% of the Qantas group which took effect from 1 March, 1993. In 1989, a 33.3% holding was acquired in regional carrier Sunstate Airlines, increased to 100% in 1990. Australian Cargo changed its name to Australian Airlines Express in May 1991. It incorpo rates the Australia Post Express Courier division. History: the company was formed in 1945 and began operations as Trans Australia Airlines. The company was acquired by 70 Cielos del Sur, a holding company, in 1987. Following the privatisation of Aerolineas Argentinas in 1990, Cielos del Sur and Iberia took shareholdings. Austrian operates scheduled passenger and cargo services from Vienna, Graz, Linz, Klagenfurt and Salzburg to 56 cities in 36 countries in Eastern and Western Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, USA and Japan. In March 1992, the carrier increased its frequency to Africa and added Vienna-Vilnius and Vienna-Copenhagen-Chicago and has since added Amman, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Minsk and Timisoara to its services. New routes include Ciudad Juarez, Guatemala City and Monterrey. Routes: Cancun, Chetumal, Ciudad Juarez, Guate mala City, Merida, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Tapachula, Tuxtla Guiterrez and Villahermosa.
