Federal Express (FM), the world's largest express transport company, carries an average 1.6 million items each working day. The carrier's main sorting centre is at Memphis International Airport. Finnair (AY), Finland's national carrier, operates an extensive network of international scheduled services from Helsinki. New services to Riga, Latvia and Tallin, Estonia operate from Helsinki and a service to Kiev in the Ukraine is planned. Routes: long-haul flights are operated to Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo and Beijing in the Far East and to Los Angeles, Montreal and New York in North America. The twice-weekly Tokyo and once-weekly Beijing flights are operated non-stop across Siberia. Finnair flies to 22 domestic destinations. Charter flights are also operated to more than 40 destinations. Co-operation partners of Finnair are JAS (Japan Air System), SAS, Swissair and Aeroflot. A preliminary agreement with Aeroflot was made in April 1991, to set up a joint-venture company to develop interna tional traffic from St Petersburg. History: Finnair, known until 1968 as Aero, was founded in November 1923 and began operations in March 1924. Seaplanes were used exclusively until 1936, when the first airports were built in Finland.
