Al though the helicopters would be produced in Turkey, the sale NEWS IN BRIEF APACHE'S HELLFIRE McDonnell Douglas Heli copter's AH-64D Longbow Apache prototype has test- fired its first Rockwell Hellfire missiles at the US Army Yuma proving grounds in Arizona. Turkey signed a $1.1 billion contract in 1992, to assemble the helicopters under licence from Sikorsky. The US heli copter builder is committed to supplying 45 Black Hawks, of which 20 have already been delivered. Over 50 helicopters are expected to be produced in 1994 at a plant at Murted, near the capital Ankara. The USA has banned the supply of military equipment to Pakistan, in protest at its nuclear-weapons programme. The main item affected is a follow-on sale of a large num ber of Lockheed F-16 fighters to supplement previous deliv eries of the aircraft. Earlier attempts by Pakistan to buy Turkish-made spare parts for F-16s and Lockheed C-130 Hercules freighters were blocked by the USA. • "^^SHBB 409 j • ^.^^MjidUJlSjj^^B ^^"' i'jiiy~ JPATS PAMPA GETS OFF THE GROUND US manufacturer Vought has started flight testing the Pampa 2000, its candidate for the US Air Force and US Na\y Joint Primary Aircraft Training System (JPATS) requirement. The first evaluation flight, lasting 82min, was on 25 May. Vought is teamed with Argentina's FMA in offering an upgrade of FMA's IA-63. The upgrade includes additional avionics and displays and an improved cockpit layout. Braking and fuel-management systems have been replaced, to meet the JPATS requirement. A VougMFMA IA-63 crashed in 1992 during practice for its Farnborough air-show display. The incident was blamed on pilot error. A second 2000 is to join the flight-test programme this month.
