The RNoAF is as signed to both the Northern and Southern Com mands. The F-16 is operated by four sqadrons: 331 and 334 at Bodo, 332 at Rygge and 338 at Orland. All Norwegian F-16 sqadrons are operational in the primary role of air defence with a secondary anti- shipping role for which the Penguin Mk.3 missile is the main armament. The RNoAF is planning a mid-life update (ML.U) for its F-16s, which will extend their service life until around 2020. The remaining RNoAF F-5s are undergoing an avionics update. They will continue to be operated by 336Sqn from Rygge in the fighter lead-in, aggressor, air defence and electronic warfare roles. Four P-3C Orions entered service in 1989. Five of the older P-3Bs have been sold to Spain, while the remainder are being retained and 'updated to P-3N standard for coastguard duties. Bell 412SPs have replaced the UH-lBs with 339 and 720 Squad rons at Bardufoss and Rygge respectively. Jaguars of 8 and 20 Squadrons are based at Masirah AB, and, like the Thumrait-based 6 Squadron Hunters, are armed with AIM-9P Sidewinders for air defence as well as modern ground-attack weapons. Strikemasters remain in use with 1 Squadron at Masirah, principally in the training role. Armed BN-2A Defenders are used to patrol coastal waters. Following construc tion of 11 F-16s for Pakistan Lockheed is halting production on the remaining 43 of a 71 aircraft order. Although Pakistan has not received any of the order yet, the country has already paid $650 million, of a total of $1.75 billion for the order. Pakistan is expected to confirm by the end of December the initial order for six K-8 Karakoram jet trainers, produced jointly with China, and to set up its own assembly line in 1994. It has also applied formally to Turkey for the purchase of Sikorsky Black Hawk UH-60 helicopters. Although the helicopters would be produced in Turkey, the sale is dependent upon US Government approval. Earlier attempts by Pakistan to buy Turkish-made spare parts for F-16s and Lockheed C-130s were blocked by the USA.
