WORLD'S AIR FORCES anti-drug airbase in the Peruvian jungle. Brazil has become a major supplier, following the acquisition of 30 Embraer EMB-312 Tucano trainers. In 1993, Peru ordered three EMB-110 Bandeirantes and one EMB- 120 Brasilia for patrol and transport duties. Peru was the first South American country to order Soviet equipment, buying Su-20 Fitters, An-26 Curls, Mi-6 Hooks and Mi-8 Hips in 1976. A second batch of Su-22s was bought in 1980. An-32 Clines replaced the An-26s in 1987, and 32 Mi-17 Hip transport helicopters were acquired in 1989-90. A batch of Y-12 light transports was ordered from China in August 1991. El Salvador sold Peru 12 Mi-17 Hips and Mi-24 Hind helicopter gunships for delivery in October 1992. The proposed deal is part of an $6 billion armed forces restructuring programme, with the Kfir part of the deal worth some $200 million. US Government approval for the sale has been given because the fighter is powered by a GE J-79-71E engine. The Philippines has pledged to improve its air defences, starting with the upgrade of Northrop F-5s, following a decision by neighbouring Malaysia in June to buy 18 MiG-29s and eight two-seat F-18Ds. The last ten of 24 Rockwell OV-10 Broncos were delivered in July 1992, and are operated by the 15th Air Strike Wing, at Sangley Point, Cavite, replacing AT-28D Trojans. A small naval air arm continues to operate its fleet of transport and liaison aircraft, while army helicopters are incorporated into the air force for operational purposes. Even before the final demise of the Warsaw Pact as a military organisation on 1 • April, 1991, the Polish armed forces had begun a major restructuring to take account of the new political situation and the departure of the large Soviet garrison from the country. Procurement of military aircraft from the Soviet Union ceased with the delivery of 12 MiG-29s in 1989, and further Fulcrum batches then on order were cancelled. More recently Poland has begun tentative defence equipment discussions in the West but its severe economic problems are unlikely to allow early acquisition of new aircraft. Formed in 1990 as a result of the amalgamation of the Wojska Lotnicze (air force) and the Wojska Obrony Powietrznej Kraju (air defence force), the WLiOP still operates some 650 aircraft including more than 380 combat aircraft. Soviet organisational struc tures are retained. There are 14 regiments of combat aircraft comprising six Air Defence (MiG/21/23/29/TS- 11), three Fighter (MiG-21/TS-ll), three Fighter- Bomber (Su-22), one Reconaissance-Bomber (Su-20/ 22), one Tactical Reconaissance (MiG-21R) and two Fighting Helicopter (Mi-2/24). Three Operational Training regiments (MiG-17/21/TS-ll) complete the work of the two Air Training regiments (TS-11). A single Helicopter Training regiment operates Mi-2s. WLiOP organisation is completed by an Air Transport regiment (An-2/12/26/28/IL-14), a Transport Heli copter regiment (Mi-6/8/17/W-3 Sokol) and ten independent Transport and liaison squadron (An-2/ Mi-2).
