KLM (Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij NV) [KL] the national airline of the Netherlands, is the oldest operating airline in the world. The carrier operates a network of scheduled passenger and cargo services from Amsterdam to 157 cities in 81 countries, spread throughout Europe; North, Central and South Amer ica; Africa; the Near, Middle and Far East and Australia. KLM has a 14.9% shareholding in Air UK, which provides feeder services to Amsterdam from nine UK regional airports. In addition, the airline has an 80% stake in Transavia and a 20% interest in Northwest Airlines. During 1993 co-operation between KLM and Northwest was increased, helped by the open-skies agreement between the USA and the Netherlands, signed in late 1992. KLM now has access to North west's domestic US network in return for access to KLM "routes in Europe via code-share agreements. KLM's regional subsidiary is now called KLM Cityhop- per.
