Magadan Avia Koncern (Aeroflot) is one of the companies to begin to seek independence from Aeroflot. It serves the remote Siberian region of Magadan. The airline's shares were offered for sale in 1985, the Government retaining a Special Share, to ensure control of major policies. In Novem ber 1992 the company's capital was doubled, increas ing to 700 million shares by a rights issue of 350 million shares. The Government and the state govern ments of Sabah and Sarawak together own 53.5% of the enlarged share capital. History: Malayan Airways was formed in 1937, by Straits Steamship, Ocean Steamship and Imperial Airways, making its inaugural flight from Singapore to Penang, via Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh, on 1 May, 1947. The airline was renamed Malaysian Airways (MAL) in 1963, when Malaysia was formed. The Governments of Malaysia and Singapore acquired joint majority control of MAL in 1966. It was renamed Malaysia- Singapore Airlines (MSA) the following year. It was restructured into two separate airlines. Malaysian Airlines Berhad was registered on 3 April, 1971, and, on 30 November the carrier was renamed Malaysian Airline System Berhad. MAS was formed in April, 1971, after the ending of the Malaysia-Singapore Airlines consortium, and operations began in October 1972. Malev Hungarian Airlines (Magyar Legikozlekedesi) lMA],the Hungarian national airline, became a public limited company from 30 June, 1992. History: Malev was founded in March 1946 as Maszovlet (Magyar-Szovjet Polgari Legiforgalmi Tar- sasag).
