TURBINE DIRECTORY combustion chamber and the low-pressure compressor already funded. The French engine manufacturer is one of several com peting for a possible mid-life update of the Saab JAS39 Gripen, for which proposals are due by the end of the third quarter of this year. Snecma has offered to develop an advanced low-pressure turbine section for the M88 in conjunction with Swedish industry. TRUD/SAMARA The Russian engine-design bureau has delayed the first flight of its NK-93 propfan by at least 12 months because of lack of funding. The engine is now due to be flown on an Ilyushin 11-76 testbed at the Zhukovsky research centre in 1995. TURBO-UNION Work is now well under way build over 100 RB.199 powerplants for Saudi Arabia's order of 48 additional Panavia Tornado GR.l strike aircraft. Meanwhile, the twin RB. 199-122 powered Eurofighter 2000 development aircraft numbers 1 and 2 have now been flown. WILLIAMS ROLLS-ROYCE Cessna's Williams Rolls-Royce FJ44-pow- ered Model 526 JPATS Citationjet was flown for the first time on 20 December, 1993. The Swedish air force, meanwhile, has awarded a Skr800 million ($99 mil lion) contract to Williams Rolls-Royce to re-engine 115 SK.60 (Saab 105) jet train er/light attack aircraft with the FJ44. The new powerplants will replace the SK.60's 7.3kN Turbomeca Aubisque engines. Williams Rolls-Royce was compet ing against AlliedSignal Engines for the contract. AlliedSignal had offered the F109. The new Williams Rolls-Royce contract also includes an option to re-engine a fur ther 20 SK.60s.
