AIR FORCES OF THE WORLD AFGHANISTAN AFGHAN REPUBLICAN AIR FORCE Afghanistan is effectively in a state of civil war with details of the air force therefore unavailable. The figures that follow relate to the air force prior to the downfall of the Najibullah regime, and do not take into account combat losses. The air force's combat element consists of four squadrons of MiG-21 interceptors and at least two squadrons of MiG-23s based at Bagram, north of Kabul. Shindand is the home of the remaining two Su-7BM ground-attack units, which are operated alongside a unit of Su-20/22s. Another ground-attack wing at Mazar-i-Sharif uses MiG-17Fs. Ilyushin 11-28 light bombers have been retired. Administered by the army, most of the air force's equip ment, including some 90 combat aircraft, was supplied by China. Three interceptor squadrons are based at Durres- Shijak and Kucove, while three ground-attack units fly from Durres-Shijak and Valona. A transport force includes about 20 fixed-wing aircraft and a similar quantity of helicopters. Maintenance and fuel availability remain a problem. The air arm's com bat element consists of a squadron of MiG-25s, delivered in 1979, and includes MiG-25R reconnaissance aircraft, together with at least three MiG-21 units assigned to air defence. Several squadrons of MiG-23s and Su-20s are allo cated to ground attack, while the remaining MiG-17Fs are operated primarily in the tactical training role, as are the MiG-15s. Lockheed eventually emerged as the Argentinean choice to upgrade the aircraft, although at one point Smiths Industries appeared to have won the competition. A Smiths selection would have proved problematic given the UK Government s opposition to the sale. Argentine manufacturer FMA is upgrading air force IA.63 Pampa jet trainers with head-up displays and weapon- delivery and navigation systems from Israeli company Elbit. One squadron had been equipped by May 1992 and upgrad ed Pampas can carry an underfuselage 30mm cannon pod and stores on four wing stations. Israel Aircraft Industries (LAI) assisted in equipping Argentina's Israeli-supplied Dagger fighters with improved avionics and helped install flight-refuelling probes on Daggers and Mirages. ANGOLA FORCE AEREA POPULAIRE DE ANGOLA (AIR FORCE) Angola is once again embroiled in a civil war following the collapse of a fragile peace accord. Traditionally, the air force received aircraft from the then Soviet Union. Additional operational assistance came from Cuba and the former East Germany. Limited procurement of Western equipment resumed in 1991, with the purchase of six maritime-patrol CASA Aviocars. Attrition in the battle against UNITA has been high. The guerrillas claimed the destruction of more than 150 aircraft, including some 50 MiG-21/23 fighters, since the beginning of 1985. The MiG-2 Is and MiG-2 3s are based at Kuito, Luena, Menongue, and Mocamedes, while a single squadron of Su- 22s is operated from Luanda, alongside MiG-17Fs. The Pilatus PC-7 fleet has been supplemented by four PC-9s. Helicopters, particularly gunships, form an impor tant part of the inventory, being flown on intensive anti- guerrilla operations, although more than one-third of the fleet has been lost to UNITA ground fire. The figures do not take into account attrition losses.
