AIR FORCES OF THE WORLO ing training on the aircraft carrier, 25 de Mayo, as well as for land-based roles. IAI's Bedek division completed conversion of six naval air arm S-2 Tracker carrier-borne ASW aircraft to turbine power, fitting the aircraft with AlliedSignal Aerospace Garrett TPE311 -1 SAW engines. The upgrade also includ ed fitting new mission systems. The navy is also understood to have received six ex-US Navy SH-2F Seasprite ASW helicopters, to be operated from MEKO 140 frigates in place of the Westland Lynx embargoed by the UK. AUSTRALIA ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE (RAAF) Development of the National Air Defence and Airspace Control System (NADACS) is continuing and when mature, will consist of elements of all three Services, and will incorporate civil-radar data. The RAAF elements will include the Air Defence Ground Environment (ADGE), the Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN), an early- warning and control capability and F-18 fighters. Upgrading of the command, control and communications elements of the RAAF ADGE should be completed by 1995 and the complete JORN system should be operational by 1997. An early-w'arning and control-capability project defi nition study is under way. An EW Support Squadron is now operational and is responsible for re-programming of RAAF EW equipment. A major avionics upgrade is being carried out on the F-111C fleet, which has been supplemented by 15 surplus USAF F- lllGs. These additional aircraft will be rotated with the current fleet to extend in-service life of F-llls to 2020. Additionally, a P-3C refurbishment contract will be signed later this year to provide the RAAF with an advanced mar itime-patrol capability. Replacement options are being examined for 12 C-130E transports, with the C-l 30J almost certain to be procured. A lead-in fighter trainer to replace the Aermacchi MB.326M is also being sought. Basic pilot training is now being conduct ed by a combination of civil-pilot screening and PC-9 fol low-through training. The Aerospatiale AS.350B Squirrel helicopters will continue to be used for aircrew naval training and the occasional ship's flight, when required. Three Bell 206B Kiowas will remain in service. It is planned that the seven Westland Sea King heli copters will remain in service until FY1998/9. They will be replaced with shipborne ASW helicopters. The operational units are 1 Aviation Regiment (which operates Bell Kiowa and UH-IH helicopters and Nomad fixed-wing aircraft) and 5 Aviation Regiment, which oper ates Sikorsky Black Hawks and Bell UH-IH gunships. Four Boeing CH-47D Chinook helicopters are expected to be introduced into service in 1995, in an exchange deal with the US Army for the 11 CH-47C Chinooks owned by Australia, but now grounded. Some 24 cannon and AIM-9 Sidewinder- armed Draken interceptors equip a surveillance wing t responsible for the defence of Austrian air space. An ambitious fleet replacement plan includes the pro curement of a fourth-generation fighter to replace the Draken fleet by the year 2000, along with combat heli copters, transport aircraft, transport helicopters, additional air-defence radars (low-level surveillance) and reconnais sance drones. Azerbaidjan seized 11 Su-24 and five MiG-25RB reconnais sance/bomber aircraft, most of them not in a flyable condi tion. Several MiG-25PD interceptors were left at Nasosnaya base after the evacuation of the air-defence unit. Armenian forces have shot down several Azeri aircraft and seized two mercenary pilots. Three MiG-2 Is are reported to be operational, as well as four Mi-24 Hind gunships. Azerbaidjan has seven well-equipped air bases: Dallyar, Nasosnaya, Kyurdamir, Sital-Shai, Pirsagat, Salyany and Sangachaly. The latter serves as a training centre. The country supported US military during the Gulf War and is eligible for low-cost equipment export following the 1994 Defence Authorisation Act. Despite US Congress approval, Bahrain is experiencing delay in obtaining excess armaments from the USA. The major obstacle has been the reluctance of US military services to declare equipment as excess. This has made it impossible to find 18 excess F-16A fighters, which head Bahrain's list of procurement priorities, although it was announced in May 1994 that Bahrain had recently purchased 14 AH-1E used Cobra attack helicopters from the USA. A $17 million deal for two C-130B transports fell through earlier this year. Delivery of three Sharpshooter targeting pods, ordered in late 1993 for its 12 F-16C/Ds, is expected in 1996. The GE FllO-poweredF-16s were deliv ered in 1990 to supplement a squadron of F-5E/F Tiger lis which have been in service since 1986/7.
