AIR FORCE^ DP f ]~ WOULD AVIACION DEL EJERCITO PERUANA (ARMY AIR ARM) The Peruvian army air arm is principally a helicopter trans port force, with the Mi-8 Hip as its mainstay. Aircraft availability is also an increasing problem. Unconfirmed reports claim that only a few of the air force's F-5s are flyable on a regular basis. The air force is also believed to have considered acquiring F5s from South Korea. The last ten of 24 Rockwell OV-10 Broncos were delivered in July 1992, and are operated by the 15th Air Strike Wing, at Sangley Point, Cavite, replac ing AT-28D Trojans. A small naval air arm continues to operate its fleet of transport and liaison aircraft, while army helicopters are incorporated into the air force for opera tional purposes. The air craft is intended to replace the TS-11 Iskra. Three of the seven aircraft have already been delivered, with the remain ing four likely to be equipped with the more powerful IL K- 15 turbjet engine. A rapid-reaction force was created in June 1993, with the 2 5th Air Cavalry Division (DKP) combining paratroop ele ments of the former 6th Pomeranian Airborne Assault Brigade and helicopters of the 37th Transport Helicopter Regiment and 4th Training Helicopter Regiment. At full strength, the DKP will have about 150 heli copters, the principal type being the PZL W-3W Huzar, the combat-support variant of the W-3 Sokol. The helicopters are now under the control of the Army, breaking with the tradition established under the former Soviet system. Formed in 1990 through the amalgamation of the Wojska Lotnicze (air force) and the Wojska Obrony Powietrznej Kraju (air defence force), the WLiOP still operates some 650 aircraft, including more than 3 80 combat aircraft. Soviet organisational structures are retained. There are 14 regiments of combat aircraft, consisting of six Air Defence (MiG/21/23/29/TS-ll), three Fighter (MiG- 21/TS-l 1), three Fighter-Bomber (Su-22), one Reconnaissance-Bomber (Su-20/22), one Tactical Reconnaissance (MiG-21R) and two Fighting Helicopter (Mi-2/24). Three Operational Training regiments (MiG- 17/21/TS-l 1) complete the work of the two Air Training regiments (TS-11). A single Helicopter Training regiment operates Mi-2s. WLiOP organisation is completed by an Air Transport regiment (An-2/12/26/28/IL-14), a Transport Helicopter regiment (Mi-6/8/17/W-3 Sokol) and ten inde pendent Transport and liaison squadron (An-2/Mi-2). There are also five Anti-Aircraft Rocket Artillery brigades. Plans were drawn up in late 1993 for the re-development of an airbase near Legnica, south-western Poland, which was abandoned by the Russian air force in August 1992. The WLiOP is increasing the number of PZL W-3 Sokol gener al purpose helicopters in service. Seven were delivered in mid-1993 and five more followed in January. By mid-June, a further five W-3Ws were produced and are to be delivered to Nwe Miasto in July. The W-3W will replace PZL Mi-2s for reconnaissance, ASW, airborne observation, SAR, cargo and also for combat support. In early March the air force also took delivery of nine PZL-130 Orlik trainer aircraft. All except one of the air force helicopter regiments are to be transferred to the Land Forces Aviation, and budget allowing, will be much modified and better equipped. At least one new helicopter unit will be formed. SOCIALISTE - ROMANIA (AIR FORCE) Romania continues to operate a small air force. A squadron of MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters are the most modern aircraft in service and are based at Constanta. Romania has awarded Israel's Elbit with the contract to upgrade some of its Mig- 2 Is, although the status of this contract remains uncertain. Elbit is upgrading IAR.330L Pumas with HUDs while the air force has also expressed an interest in the Python 3 air- to-air missile for the IAR-99 Soim. The air force is organised into two air divisions, centred on Bucharest and Cluj military districts, each of which has two combat regiments. The 12 Romanian air-defence squadrons operate MiG-21s, MiG-23s and MiG-29s, while the two ground-attack regiments have replaced their MiG- 17s with the joint Yugoslav/Romanian 1AR-93 Orao. Some 2001AR-93 Oraos are required, including 165 IAR-93Bs fit ted with a locally designed afterburner. L-39 Albatros equip a reconnaissance unit. FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 24 - 30 August 1994
