The Russians are also considering a forward-looking infra-red radar option to enable more accurate targeting of the drop zone. Apart from the firefighting variant, Beriev is keen to promote the Be-200 in other roles, such as those of air ambulance and search and rescue. Its designers also see the Be-200 as a passenger or cargo transport, joining terminals located on inshore stretches of water, with which Russia, for example, is liberally sprin kled. The passenger version can fit 15 rows of four seats with a centre aisle. The wide loading door at the front of the cabin is used primarily for cargo. The cargo version also boasts a winch, together with rails down which containers may be run. The ambulance variant has racks for 30 stretchers, or seats for 40 patients. The Russians are basing their marketing effort on the Be-200's versatility and ability to be operated without land-based aerodromes, where construction might be impossible. Operation from water also enables new termi nals to be easily established away from densely populated areas, thus helpingto keep them quiet and traffic-free. A fleet of at least ten firefighting Be-200s will be purchased by the Irkutsk authorities for local use and for leasing to neighbouring Krasnoyark. The manufacturer believes that the total Russian market will peak at around 50 machines. Worldwide, a market for over 70 firefighters is estimated, broken down as, roughly, 12 for North America, 30 for Europe and 28 for the Asia/Pacific region. The remaining worldwide market for pas senger and cargo versions, as well as other modifications, is estimated to amount to 150 machines: 40 for Russia, 60 for the Asia/Pacific region and 50 for North America. Perhaps optimistically, Berieve puts tne overall forecast for sales at over 300 air craft between 1997 and 2012.
