MILITARY HELICOPTER DIRECTORY building 57 CH-47Js. Other Japanese licence production includes Fuji, building 88 Bell AH- 1S Cobras, and Mitsubishi, building Sikorsky SH-60Js and UH-60Js. Upgrading of Kaman SH2-G Seasprites for die US Navy continues. Egypt is upgrading its Seasprites to SH2 G standard. If the cost of high-technology military heli copters is inhibitive, one option is to stick with simpler machines or upgrade earlier models. This approach is exemplified by two new heli copters, the military Bell 230, and the PZL Swidnik W-3 Huzar. Bell promoted die 230 at die Farnborough air show, following a success ful trials programme with a navalised version in Chilean service. The W-3 shows just how much can be extrapolated from a design (in its earlier Mi-2 incarnation) dating to 1961. Just how popular such relatively cheap and capable designs will be remains to be seen. So far, the W-3 has been sold to the Polish forces only. The W-3's Huzar variant, flown only as a prototype to date, has been produced by Swidnik in part- Mil's Mi-171 has more powerful Klimov TV-117VM turboshafts than the Mi-17s TV3-117MTs nership with South African manufacturer Kentron. Swidnik believes that a helicopter costing half as much as die opposition, but giv ing 75% of the performance, will be an attrac tive proposition. • Manufacturer Type ATTACK Agusta A.129 Mangusta Denel/Atlas Aviation Rooivalk Bell AH-1F HueyCobra AH-1W SuperCobra Boeing/Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche Eurocopter Tiger/Tigre Kamov Ka-50 Hokum McDonnell Douglas AH-64A Apache AH-64C/D Longbow Apache Mil Mi-24 Hind Mi-28 Havoc Mi-40 Sokol W-3WB Huzar HEAVY TRANSPORT (ov Bell/Boeing V-22 Osprey Boeing CH-47D Chinook Notes Power is quoted ir effect) and HOGE (hover warfare Powerplant Power IkW) 2 x LHTEC T800 or Rolls-Royce Gem 1,044 1004 2 x Turbomeca Makila 1A2 1,492 1 x Textron Lycoming T53 L-703 1,342 2 x General Electric T700-401 1,285 2 x LHTEC T800 turboshaft 1,532 2xMTU/Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca 1,171 MTR 390 2 x Klimov TV3-117VK 2 x General Electric T700-701 1,633 1.265 2 x General Electric T700-701C 1,409 2 x Klimov TV3-117 2 x Klimov TV3-117VM 2 x Klimov TV3-117VM 2xTWD-10W 1,633 1,545 1,545 660 er 22,700kg) 2 x Allison T406-AD-400 2 x Textron Lycoming T55-L-712 4,586 2,796 kW (lkW=1.34shp); weights are in kg (lkg=2.2lt ng out of ground effect) are quoted in feet (100ft= Max TO weight (kg) 4,100 8,750 4,535 6,690 7,790 5,800 10,800 9,525 10,107 12,000 11,660 11,900 6,400 24,948 22,680 ); speed is 30.5m).
