A more radical conversion using uprated R-R RB.211-S24B turbofans results in the -250 with additional fuel capacity and structural strengthening to give a 9,410km range. There is also a more modest -50 con version giving a 204,000kg gross weight. MCDONNELL DOUGUS Douglas Aircraft, 3855 Lakewood Boulevard, Long Beach, California 90846, USA. The type is well thought of and most variants fetch good prices. Like other Douglas aircraft, the airframe lasts well and is a candi date for freight conversion. DC-9X A revitalised version of the widely sold DC-9 is being offered, although the programme suffered from the withdrawal of Air Canada as launch customer in mid-1994. Vital to the programme are new, Stage 3, engines with low emissions and improved fuel consump tion. Customers can choose from the P&W JT8S-218B, R-R Tay 670 or BMW R-R BR715. Douglas believes that as many as 3 00 DC-9-30s, -40s and -50s are candidates for the conversion. The modernisation provides for the installa tion of an MD-88-style flightdeck, MD-90- style cabin interior and structural modifications. The programme will involve die production of upgrade kits to be produced by an engineering company, which will sustain the non-recurring costs involved in the re- engineering. Douglas will provide an interface between the airline customers and the manu facturing consortium. MD-80 Five versions of the MD-80 family are still on offer: the MD-81, -82, -83, -87, and -88. Unlike the DC-9, the MD-80 is powered by the -200 series JT8D engines, which provide Stage 3 capability. Including some production of the MD-82/-83 in China, total production stands at more than 1,100 aircraft. MD-90 The narrowbody MD-90 and widebody MD-11 form the main planks of Douglas' future production. Test flights of the first three MD-90s continue, with certification due in November 1994. The aircraft is powered by two IAE V2525- D5s and is stretched by 1.45m forward of the wing for a total length of 46.5m. The MD-90- 30 is the current production version, but the - 50 ER version is also on offer. The latter has uprated V2528-D5 engines and carries 153 passengers. A 187-seat -50 for the inclusive- tour market is also offered. Four versions of the MD-11 are available TRUNKLINER Douglas won the Chinese TrunkLiner contest for 40 twinjets. Production of die aircraft will take place at Shanghai Aviation Industrial and in Long Beach. Chinese development of dual-tan dem landing-gear continues, although the pro duction aircraft will not now be equipped with die extra gear. Douglas expects to sell further MD-90s into China beyond die TrunkLiner programme. MD-95 The launch of this proposed 100-seater, widi BMW R-R BR.715 turbofans, is on hold pend ing a market improvement. A plan to build the type in China has also been dropped. Douglas intends the MD-95 to be similar in size to die DC-9-30 and is proposing two versions. The - 30 would have a range of 2,530km and the -30 ER would travel 3,250km because of an auxiliary fuel tank. Both would have five-abreast seating and a state-of-the-art cockpit. In late 1994, a series of Japanese and Korean risk-sharing agreements were to be signed. MD-11 Four versions of the MD-11 are available: the 300-passenger MD-11, with a range of 12,800km; a freighter, with a lOOt uplift; a Combi capable of taking ten pallets on the main deck, with additional freight below the main deck; and a Convertible Freighter ver sion. At 61.2m, the aircraft is 5.66m longer than the DC-10, which it succeeds. Seating capaci ties on the standard aircraft range from 250 passengers in a three-class arrangement, to more than 400 in an all-economy layout. Two powerplants are offered: GE's CF6-80C2 and theP&WPW4460. Discussions widi airlines are under way con cerning a family of MD-1 lERs. The basic ER gives 740km extra range, but under study is a stretched fuselage aircraft with an unchanged wing, which would provide capacity for 365, three-class passengers to a range of 11,110km. Douglas has also defined a family of twin- engine MD-11 derivatives. Initial emphasis is on a medium-range version with 34 fewer seats in a shortened MD-11 fuselage. Ranges vary from 10,930km to 13,890km. A composite fin would replace the current metal fin and central engine. Aerodynamic improvements to the outer wing would enhance take-off and cruise performance. MD-12 Douglas continues to study a four-engined three-deck aircraft aimed at the high-capacity, long-range sector, although die tempo of work has eased markedly. The main two versions under consideration are a passenger aircraft with high-density capacity of up to 579 seats and ranges varying from 13,100km to 14,800km and a freighter with a 141,650kg payload and 8,400km range. ROMBAC 1-11 560 This licence-built BAe One-Eleven was first flown in September 1982. It is based on the BAe One-Eleven Series 300/400, with the fuselage lengthened by 4.1 lm and seating up to 109 passengers. The wingspan is increased by 1.5m and the landing gear is strengthened. 1-11-2500 Romaero intends to proceed with production of a R-R Tay 650-powered One-Eleven-500, which it calls the 1-11-2500, or AirStar 2500. The Romanian Government is trying to secure funding for the programme; in particular to FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 26 October - 1 November 1994
