INDUSTRY De-icing vehicle developed GRAHAM WARWICK/ATLANTA ELBERTA INDUSTRIES has completed development of a mobile de-icing vehicle designed to be operated at an airport gate, at the end of a runway or remotely. The Elberta, Alabama-based company has designed the Expeditor to meet new US Federal Aviation Administration rules which set time limits between de-icing and take off. The Expeditor features four- wheel drive and four-wheel steer ing; a walk-in/stand-up engine room and galley; an enclosed de- icing operator's cab; and a non- rotating boom mounting a remotely controlled nozzle. The nozzle can be rotated through 370° horizontally and +307-10° vertically. The nozzle platform, which can be raised to more than 10m by die main boom, mounts an extendable, scissors- type, boom which can increase the nozzle's reach by almost 10m. The 25,000kg vehicle has an ll,3701itres (3,000USgal) tank capacity; almost 9,5001itres for Type I de-icing fluid or water and almost l,9001itres for Type II anti-icing fluid. The nozzle can pump between 40 and 2801itres/min. 3 "Fuel savings, higher payloads, faster pre-flight briefings..." "Things have improved since we started using KLM s Flight Planning System." To compete effectively, you need an edge in technology. Computerised flight plans, for example, lead to safer, more effi cient and economical flights. Fuel savings, higher payloads, reduced work for flight crew and ground staff result in lower ope rating costs which directly influences the bottom line margins. Leading the way in this area is KLM's Flight Planning System (FPS), with its enviable record for accuracy and reliability. FPS is accessible 24 hours a day. Wit hout operator intervention it processes navigational and meteorological informa tion, performance and ATC data for ICAO/FAA flight plans. This data is translated immediately into flight plans, track selection and fuel requirements. On request FPS can be adapted to suit any airline's specific needs. If you'd like to know more about FPS or any other product of KLM Systems Ser vices, like CODECO, CORDA, FIRDA, 1MPALA,... please contact us at AMS/- SW, PO Box 7700, 1117 ZL Schiphol Airport, The Netherlands. Telephone +31-20-649 68 04, Sita Code AMSSWKL, Fax+31-20-649 68 48. * The Reliable Airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Horizons ventures into Malaysia HORIZONS TECHNOLOGY (HTI) of San Diego, California, has formed a joint ven ture with Kuala Lumpur-based Zetro to provide aircraft-engineer ing, avionics-integration and soft ware-development services in Mal aysia and the Asia-Pacific region. The agreement to form Zetro Technologies follows the selection of HTI to supply mission-plan ning equipment for the Royal Malaysian Air Force's McDonnell Douglas F-18Ds. Zetro holds 60% of the new company, while HTI holds the remaining 40%. Zetro already provides engi neering services to the Malaysian aviation industry and operates a repair centre in Kuala Lumpur, which handles instruments, avion ics and accessories. HTI is supply ing F-18 mission-support systems to the Finnish, Malaysian and Swiss air forces under contracts totalling $9 million. • CONTRACTS • CHINA UNITED DEAL China United Airlines has become the third Chinese customer for Israeli avionics manufacturer Rada Elec tronic Industries, which has sold the airline automatic-test equipment worth $1.2 mil lion. The SMART commer cial-avionics test station has been developed to test an air craft's electrical systems and electronic equipment. • SPAR CONTRACT Spar Aerospace has won a series of contracts worth over C$5 million ($3.6 million) from McDonnell Douglas to supply deployable flight-inci dent recorder sets for the US Navy's fleet of F-18 fighters. • HUD SUPPORT AlliedSignal General Aviation Avionics has signed an agree ment with head-up-display (HUD) manufacturer Flight Visions to repair, overhaul and provide 24h spares sup port for the Illinois-based company's HUDs. 20 FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 4 - 10 January 1995
