Elettronica launches EW test sets THE UK AND GERMAN subsidiaries of Italian-based Elettronica have launched a fami ly of electronic-warfare (EW) test sets which the companies say offer a unique flight-line-equipment validation capability. The Elettronica approach dif fers from traditional built-in-test equipment in that it is external to the system under test and is used to evaluate the unit as a whole rather than diagnosing faults at electronic-component level. Elettronica (UK) is offering three distinct test units. They are the Solent, for infra-red (IR) jam mers; the Hamble, for radar- warning receivers (RWR); and die Baringa missile-approach-warner (MAW) test set. The Solent system has already been tested with the ALQ-144 and ALQ-157 IR jammers, while a Hamble-type system is likely to RAF GR. 7s could benefit from EW flight-line tester be offered for a forthcoming Royal Air Force requirement for a flight-line tester for use with the service's ARI.18223 RWRs, ARI. 18241 radar-homing and warning receivers and the warning sub-system of the Zeus integrated EW suite. The Baringa MAW tester was developed by the Australian Defence Science & Technology Organisation, with Elettronica acquiring the rights to future development and manufacturing. Elettronica's German-based arm is producing 6-18GHz ELT-805 and 10MHz-20GHzBGi-501 sys tems, which have similar technolo gy to mat of their UK counterparts. Some 100 ELT-805s are already thought to have been supplied to an unidentified customer. J INDUSTRY Avionics sensors certificated ROCKWELL-Collins Series 900 avionics sensors have been certificated on the Boeing 747-400. Approval on the Boeing 777 is scheduled for April 1995 and certi fication efforts are under way on the 757 and 767, Collins says. The Series 900 product line covers VHF communication and navigation, high-frequency and satellite communications, data- link, Mode S transponder, traffic alert and collision avoidance, instrument-landing system, radar altimeter and weatJier radar. Units are interchangeable with Collins' Series 700 products, the new equipment having improved reliability, increased "real-world" environmental tolerance and pro viding required FM-immunity protection. The company says that 11 airlines have selected Series 900 equipment. • Organizing Service Quality Management The importance of service quality as a strategic success factor is constantly growing. This is not only true for production companies where "Total Quality Management" has already very successfully been put into effect but also to the same extent for the service industry. On February 16 and 17,1995 the first international seminar called "SmileS Quality Concept" will take place at the Lufthansa Training Center in Seeheim, near Frankfurt. The SmileS Quality Concept offers a "System method for the interactive long-term enhancement of Service quality". This course is particularly designed to tackle the problems inherent in a service company, although the solutions proposed can equally well be applied to the service sector of production companies. Emphasis is put on the following topics: • Basis: The philosophy of service quality • Critical success factors: e.g. Role of Management, Internal Customers, Measurement Systems, Delegations Authority • Organizational Implementation Interested?
