GENERAL AVIATION AlliedSignal in APU kit talks with Raisbeck ALLIEDSIGNAL AND Raisbeck Engineering are in preliminary talks on the pos sibility of fitting external auxil iary power units (APUs) to business jets. The companies' scheme would allow an AlliedSignal APU to be attached to the rear fuselage of an aircraft without cutting into the structure. The APU would then be cov ered with a rear-fuselage fairing similar to Raisbeck's Lear Locker (Flight International, 19-25 April), which is used to provide addition al luggage-storage space in the Learjet 31 series. Raisbeck chief executive James Raisbeck says that the first fit is likely to be to the Raytheon Aircraft Hawker 800 and the British Aerospace 125-700. He also predicts potential applica tions for the new Learjet 45. Raisbeck expects, however, that it will take "a minimum of two years" before the modification can be offered to the market. The modification will weigh about 80kg, including the APU, but the fairing will reduce the air craft's aerodynamic drag. The Lear Locker fairing has been shown to produce a 4% drag reduction on the Learjet 31 at MachO.7. The cost of the modification is expected to come to about $180,000. Q NEWS IN BRIEF • FALCON CONFIRMATION AlliedSignal has officially confirmed the selection of the TFE731-40 for the Dassault Falcon 50EX business jet. The 19kN (4,250lb)-thrust engine will have a periodic inspection interval of 2,500h and a compressor-zone inspec tion interval of 5,000h — a 75% improvement over current intervals. Go-ahead for Caravan conversion fully funded SOLOY HAS TAKEN delivery of the Cessna 208 Grand Caravan which will serve as the prototype for its Dual Pac-re- engineing programme. The Olympia, Washington- based company also says that it now has sufficient funding for the project, courtesy of local busi nessman Keith McCaw. Soloy's plan is to certificate the Caravan with its 990k\V (l,330shp) Dual Pac driving a sin gle propeller in place of the usual 500kW Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-114A. The Dual Pac itself consists of two PT6D-114As, with a patent ed combining gear-box. The powerplant is in final certification The modified nose section... testing, with approval due in June, and the Caravan will be the first aircraft certificated to use it. ...makes room for Soloy's Dual-Pac Company president Joe Soloy expects that the "twin-engine single-propeller" aircraft will be certificated within 22 months. He wants to have the prototype flying at the National Business Aircraft Association convention at Las Vegas, Nevada, at the end of September. Soloy says that the modifica tion includes a 1.83m fuselage stretch, an increase of maximum gross weight to 4,770kg, and a new engine cowling faired into a redesigned cargo pod. Caravan-float-manufac turer Wipaire is working in co-ordination with Soloy to design and produce floats for the new model. • MDHS speeds up 600N programme MCDONNELL DOUGLAS Helicopter Systems (MDHS) has accelerated development of the MD600N (formerly the MD630N) to bring forward US certification to the third quarter of 1996. Several design changes have been announced by the Mesa, Arizona-based company,, including a switch to a more pow erful, digitally controlled, version of the Allison 250 turboshaft. The single 590kW (790shp) Allison 250-C47 will be de-rated to 450kW for the MD600N — a stretched development of the MD530N light helicopter. The seven- to eight-seat MD600N features MDHS' NOTAR no- tail-rotor anti-torque system. Formal go-ahead for the changes was given in March, and all 1996 production has been sold, savs MDHS, which will soon be accepting orders for 1997 delivery. Other changes include redesign of the interior to increase aft- cabin space by moving an under- seat fuel-cell below floor level. Fuel capacity and aircraft range arc unchanged. A redesigned rear door will improve accessibility, and the cabin has a longer flat floor to increase cargo capacity, MDHS says. • FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 17 - 23 May 1995
