PEOPLE Richard Smith has been pro moted to staff vice-president for government affairs at Textron, of Washington DC. He was formerly director for government affairs and also served for 24 years in the US Army, retiring in 1985 with the rank of colonel. • LEARJET Bombardier subsidiary Learjet, of Wichita, Kansas, has named James Stewart vice-president for finance and chief financial officer. He was most recently controller for the Bombardier regional-air craft division, based in Toronto, Canada. Robert Agostino is appointed director of marketing flight operations. He was formerly director of flight operations and chief pilot for ship-builder AWH. • EUTELSAT Satellite-communications organ isation Eutelsat, of Paris, France, has extended by three years the term of office of its director-gen eral, Jean Grenier. • NORTHROP Manufacturer Northrop Grum man, of Los Angeles, California, has appointed Dr Dean Baker vice-president and general manag er of precision weapons and elec tronics systems, based in Hawthorne, California. With the company since 1979, Baker was most recently vice-president and programme manager for the tri- service stand-off attack missile at the Military Aircraft division, also at Hawdiorne. • ALLIEDSIGNAL Serge Buchakjian has been named vice-president of interna tional business development at AlliedSignal Aerospace's Gov ernment Electronic Systems, of Torrance, California. He was for merly regional director of aero space and defence systems at Smiths Industries' International division, based at Stamford, Connecticut. • LOCKHEED Alfred Hansen has been appoint ed executive vice-president of Lockheed Aeronautical Systems (LASC), of Marietta, Georgia. He replaces John McLellan, who was named president in March. Hansen, a retired US Air Force general, joined LASC in 1990 and is a former vice-president for airlift programmes. • SIMUFLITE Dick Holland has become man ager of Gulfstream training pro grammes at SimuFlite Training International, of Dallas/Forth Worth Airport, Texas. Holland, a corporate pilot, has also been director of operations for Alpha Aviation, Dallas, and was a captain with Becker Gaming, of Las Ve- Seun O'Malley • RACAL Sean O'Malley has been appointed managing director of Racal Avionics, of London, UK. Bradley Hart becomes vice-president for spe cial-mission-aircraft sales, hav ing formerly been director for advertising and merchandising marketing. Peter Herr has been appointed vice-president for international sales in the Europe/ Africa/Middle East region. He was most recently regional director for Western Europe/ Africa. OBITUARY • CARLHIRSCHMANN Carl Hirschmann, founder of Jet Aviation of West Palm Beach, Florida, has died at the age of 74. He bought the former Globair Hangars in Basle, Swit zerland, in 1967, following discussions with US Generals seeking to start a charter company under the name of Executive Jet Aviation, to perform main tenance on their own air craft and those of third parties. In 1972, he brought Jet Aviation into the field of aircraft management and charter business. The com pany is now the largest international business-avia tion service company in the world.
