The aircraft include AlliedSignal avionics and a Flight Visions head-up display and mission computer. Libya donated ten L- 39 Albatros trainers to the air force in mid-1990. The air force ordered 40 FJV1B-312 Tucano trainers, most of which, togedier with the majority of 80 ordered for Iraq, were assembled in Egypt under licence from Embraer. Ethiopia ETHIOPIAN AIR FORCE The country has recently emerged from a long civil war fol lowing the overthrow of die Mengistu regime by die Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front in May 1991. Attrition and serviceability problems have reduced the air force considerably. The air force is now run by officers of die former armed forces who have pledged loyalty to the new Government.. It is not known if it is still service able. lafflETTJ ILMAVOIMAT (AIR FORCE) The Finnish air force will replace its SaabJ-35 Draken and MiG-2 Ibis combat aircraft with 64 McDonnell Douglas E- 18C/D Hornet fighters. Deliveries of die Hornets will begin late in 1995 and deliveries will continue through the year 2000. The batch consists of seven two-seat and 57 single-seat models, most of which will lie assembled in Finland. The air arm is organised into tiiree air defence wings, each assigned to one of the diree air defence areas into which Finland is divided. The Lapland Air Defence Wing consists of Fighter Squadron 11 at Rovaniemi, flying Saab J-35 Draken fighters on all-weather defence of northern Finland. Covering western Finland, 21 Fighter Squadron of die Satakunta Wing has also operated Drakens since 1985, and is now based at Tampere/Pirkkala Airport. The third wing is die Finnish Air Force tests a VSNF-18D Hornet replacement for its J-35 Drakens Karelia Air Defence Wing, based at Kuopio/Rissala and con sisting of 31 Fighter Squadron with MiG-2 Ibis for the air defence of eastern Finland. A reconnaissance squadron at Tikkakoski operates MiG-2 Ibis and British Aerospace Hawks. A single transport squadron is based at Utti. Alongside Hughes 500 helicopters, tJiree Fokker F27 Friendships are operated, while seven Mil Mi-8s form die utility element. Three special-mission Learjets are used for target-towing, ground-mapping and ECM training. Ten Valmet L-90 Redigos are used for liaison duties. The .Air Academy at Kauhava trains pilots on the Valmet Vinka primary trainer, followed on die Hawk. Fifty Hawk Mk51s were purchased in 1977, including 46 built under licence by Yalmet. In December 1990, the decision was made to purchase seven Hawk Mk51 As, and they were delivered in 1993 and 1994. While the Dassault Rafale multi-role fighter was given strong backing, support for die Future Large .Aircraft military transport, how ever, was more muted. Even although Frances 1995-2000 arms-procurement bill will be increased in real terms, key defence programmes, such as the Rafale, are to be delayed. Deliveries of the first of up to 234 Rafale Ds will now only begin in 2000, although the navy will still get its aircraft into service by 2000. Embraer's EMB-312 Tucano was selected to meet the turboprop trainer requirement, and an initial order was signed in October 1991. Deliveries of Mirage 2000s to die French air force contin ue against a requirement for 318 aircraft, and diree Mirage 2000N units are operational. A total of 18 Mirage LVA bombers were converted several years ago to Mirage IVP standard, with advanced avionics and nuclear missiles. The aircraft will remain in service until 1996. Fifty-five Mirage ElCs arc being converted to F.1CT enhanced ground-attack standard in a programme initiated in 1989. The air force would like additional military tanker/transports by die end of the century to service its Mirage 2000 fighters and the Rafale. The air force has taken deliver ' of two A310-300 troop transports on order to replace McDonnell Douglas DC-8s, which are being phased out. French air force operational units are organised under the 38 FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 5 - 11 July 1995
