. J J J —• J S ZS ~~SJ J SJ —. J J ««SJS. Stretched 747 may be launched in 1996 747-400 The MTOW of the -400 has continued to edge upwards, with the introduction of mod est aerodynamic improvements and the use of slightly more powerful engines, but Boeing finally seems poised to stretch the 747's fuse lage for the first time since its introduction more than 25 years ago (see entry for -500X/600X). The -400 is the most successful 747 variant produced to date, with nearly 350 in service. Principal changes from earlier 747s include a 3.66m increase in wingspan, with the addition of winglets (except on the -400D). The -400 also introduced a two-man crew to the 747 series for the first time. Operating weights and range are increased, and fuel consump tion is significantly lower. The so-called 747-400 performance- improvement package has been adopted as standard, offering a 0.5% reduction in drag. This is achieved through the use of a re-pro filed dorsal fin, and by ensuring that the wing spoilers are held down more tightly during the cruise. The transfer of fuel from the hori- zontal-tailplane tank has been slowed down, to prolong trim drag alleviation. The package allows a gross-weight increase of 2.27t, yielding either 180km in additional range or a 1.6t higher payload. The 747-400F combines the short upper- deck of the -200F with the stronger and larg er wing of the -400. Empty weight has been reduced by 2,000kg, compared with the -200F, and the aircraft can carry a payload of 113t a distance of 8,150km. The -400F has the same MTOW as the passenger -400. The 747-400 was launched in July 1985, and first flown in April 1988.
