Roger Sperry • LEARJET Roger Sperry has been named vice-president for marketing and sales at Bombardier subsidiary Learjet, of Wichita, Kansas. Sperry, previously vice-president for North American sales, re places Ted Farid, who has resigned. Before joining Learjet, Sperry held senior sales-man agement positions during a 20- year career with Cessna Aircraft. • AIRBUS Airbus Industrie has appointed Jiirgen Thomas, the former executive vice-president of pre liminary design and technology at Daimler-Benz Aerospace Air bus, to the post of senior vice- president of its new Large Air craft division. Thomas has worked in the aerospace industry since 1962, moving via VFW to Airbus activities, where he started as chief engineer on the A310 programme in 1976. Most recently, he was European pro gramme director for the transat lantic very-large-commercial- transport study, which involved Airbus partners and US manufac turer Boeing. In his new post, he is responsible for all development of Airbus' new large aircraft. • LUFTHANSA German national carrier Lufthansa has appointed Jiirgen Raps as its new chief pilot, replacing Robert Salzl, who is retiring from flying duties. He took over his new post on 1 April. His predecessor is retiring from flying after 34 years with the air line. He had been Lufthansa's chief pilot since October 1992. • IAI Maj Gen Avigdor Yanouch Ben- Gal has been appointed chairman of Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), succeeding Zvi Zur. Ben-Gal served in the Israel Defence Forces from 1995-83, and is a former chairman of the Investment Com pany for International Trade Development, an advanced-tech nologies specialist. • KLM Kees den Hartog, deputy presi dent of Netherlands national carri er KLM, is to retire at me end of the year. Den Hartog, with KLM since 1961, joined the KLM board of managing directors in 1989. Cees van Woudenberg, executive vice-president for personnel and organisation, is appointed to the board of managing directors. Van Woudenbourg, with KLM since 1989, was previously executive vice-president for flight services. Robert Hougee has been named vice-president for KLM cargo operations, replacing Jan Meurer, who becomes senior vice-president and area manager for KLM passen ger sales and services in North America and Mexico. Hougee, with KLM since 1978, was formerly divisional controller at passenger sales and services and is also a member of the Air UK board. • CESSNA General-aviation-aircraft maker Cessna Aircraft, of Wichita, Kansas, has named Douglas Smith director of sales and marketing for single-engine business. He was for merly director of sales at Aero spatiale General Aviation. • ORBITAL US Space and information-sys tems company Orbital Sciences, of Dulles, Virginia, has appointed Jeffrey Pirone acting chief fi nancial officer, following the resig nation of Carlton Crenshaw, executive vice-president and chief financial officer. Pirone, now vice- president and controller, will hold the position until the post is filled permanently. • USAF Maj Gen Kenneth Eickmann has been promoted to lieutenant-gen eral and appointed commander of the US Air Force's Aeronautical Systems Center at Wright-Pat terson AFB, Ohio. He is comman der of the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center, at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. • BRYMON AIRWAYS New chief pilot and general manager for flight operations at Brymon Airways, Mike Schofield, (left) who was previously the Royal Air Force officer commanding HM The Queen's Flight, meets Charlie Bielby, one of Brymon's 72 pilots.
