The following data represent the air force before the overthrow of the Somalian Government. The Mirage I-lCZs have been withdrawn, and the Harvards are also being retired, with the aircraft being offered for sale. Plans to withdraw the C. 160Z transports may be shelved in favour of an upgrade to the aircraft. The air force has an require ment to replace its Impala aircraft, with the BAe Hawk and Aermacchi MB339 among the contenders. I A.I upgraded 12 Cheetah E combat aircraft, with the Elta EL/M-203 5 multi-mode radar and a more powerful variant of the Snecma Atar 9K-50 taken from the Mirage F.1CZ. These aircraft are also to receive the R-Darter active-radar- guided air-to-air missile. Since 1989, the SAAF has scaled down from its peak strength during the conflict in Namibia and the coinciding South African involvement in southern Angola. Its budget has been considerably reduced, although the defence min istry has ordered for 12 Rooivalk attack helicopters. Cutbacks have left the service with old C-130s and some 40 C-47 Dakotas, 20 of which have been converted to Turbo-Dak configuration with P&WC PT6s. Six DC-4s were retired in 1993. Boeing 707 tanker/transports — which also have an ELINT role — and the Cheetah conversions of Mirage Ills entered service recently.. In 1994, the service started replac ing its 108 Harvard piston trainers with 60 Pilatus PC-7 tur boprop trainers. The armed forces of the former independent South African homelands of Bophuthatswana, Ciskei, Transkei and Venda and the ANC's MK armed wing have been integrated into the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). A planned F-4s upgrade appears to be dormant, and the PC-9 trainer purchase has also collapsed. The RoKAF is seeking external help in developing the KTX-1 turboprop trainer, and is actively canvassing for internation al collaboration in developing the KTX-II advanced jet trainer/light fighter. A competition for a stand-off missile is between the AGM-130 and the AGM-142. The RoKAF is buying 120 F-16C/Ds, with 12 supplied from the USA, 36 provided as kits for assembly by Samsung Aerospace, and the remaining 72 built under licence by Samsung. Under the offset agreement, Lockheed Martin may support development of the KTX-II. The RoKAF selected the BAe Hawk 60 as its advanced trainer, with an order for 20, while the CN-2 3 5 was ordered to meet the C-X transport requirement.
