The reported sale of an additional 48 MiG-29s and 24 Su-24s has yet to be confirmed. There are now four three-squadron interceptor regiments with MiG- 21s, MiG-23s, MiG-25s and MiG-29s. The strike/attack force has Su-22s, Su-24s and MiG-23s. Tadjikistan has declared its intention to form its own air force and to buy Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters, but, so far, Russian units provide air cover for border guards on the frontier with Afghanistan. if '•'" ',1 REPUBLIC OF CHINA AIR FORCE Taiwan has bought 150 F-16s and 60 Mirage 2000-5s, to counter the purchase of Su-27s by China, with deliveries of the Mirages starting in 1996. With the acquisition of F-16s, further upgrades of the A-l Ching-Kuo Indigenous Defence Fighter (IDF) are unlikely, with orders cut in 1992 from a planned 250 to just 130 aircraft. Following entry into ser vice, technical problems led to the IDF being grounded. The IDF is replacing ageing F-104s and F-5s. Taiwan is to lease USAFT-38s, to provide extra training for F-16 pilots. The service is organised along US lines and has six wings, plus a VIP squadron and a training centre. F-5Es are flown by the 1st, 2nd and 455di Tactical Fighter Wings (TFW) at Tainan, I [sin Chu and Chic Ye respectively, and also by two squadrons in the 5th Composite Wing (CW) at Tao Yuan. Other elements of the 5th CW are an RF-104G reconnais sance squadron and the F-5 OCU.
