Handley Page Herald A twin-turboprop regional aircraft powered by the R-R Dart, the high-winged Herald began life as a rapid-piston-four-engined design, equipped with radial piston engines. The first prototype was flown in this guise in August 1955. The decision to switch to turboprop power was taken in 195 7, before deliveries of the piston-engined version had begun. A total of 50 "Dart" Heralds was built through to 1970, and 12 aircraft still current, in the cargo role. Max weight 19,500kg. Accommodation (Series 200): 56 passengers. Wingspan 28.9m length 23m height 7.3m. Original design life 30,000 cycles, no hours limit, 15 years. Fleet leaders Cycles 44,595. Hours 32,013. Age 32 years. NAMC YS-11 This Japanese-designed regional airliner, pow ered by two R-R Dart turboprops, was pro duced by Nihon Aircraft Manufacturing (NAMC). The 60-seat aircraft was conceived to satisfy the requirement of Japan's domestic air lines. Some 182 examples were produced between 1962 and 1973, including mixed-traf fic and all-cargo models. The low-winged air craft is similar in appearance to the BAe 748. Some 83 examples are current, and some are Q;ilM|:j4;Ii]*til;1:Mil.-M Type Long-range IPyushin 11-18 Medium-range Lockheed L-188 Electra Short-range Antonov An-24 BAe (Avro)/HAL 748 BAe (Vickers) Viscount de Havilland Dash 7 Fairchild FH-227 Fokker F27/Fairchild F-27 GD (Convair) 580 GD (Convair) 600/640 Handley Page Herald NAMC YS-11 Shorts 330 Cargo Antonov'An-12 Antonov An-26 Lockheed L100 Hercules *»lrlll!W:MI!H: Pre 1970 62 57 81 46 20 0 36 171 96 23 12 63 0 101 21 10 rl'JI.I4:VM*l:!.]J:JIIII.I 1970 1971 1972 9 0 57 11 0 0 0 12 0 0 0 10 0 13 25 4 0 0 57 8 0 0 0 13 0 0 0 5 0 11 25 0 0 0 56 4 0 0 0 15 0 0 0 2 0 17 27 3 1973 0 0 54 4 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 3 0 15 34 0 Note: Figures include aircraft both in service and stored Source: Airclaims CASE Database/Paul Duffy 1974 0 0 55 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 44 1 1975 0 0 63 4 0 0 0 8 0 0 0 0 1 0 48 4 1976 0 0 • 47 3 0 0 0 6 0 0 0 0 2 0 47 6 1977 0 0 36 5 0 1 0 8 0 0 0 0 2 0 37 1 TOTAL STORED FLEET 0 0 18 5 0 4 0 3 0 0 0 0 5 0 50 1 0 0 0 9 . 0 6 0 4 -o 0 0 0 8 \< 0 51 4 0 0 0 7 0 15 0 7 0 0 0 0 | 13 0 56 0 1981 0 0 0 7 0 19 0 10 0 0 0 0 15 0 13 4 Total stored fleet dune '96) 16 29 9 30 21 74 24 14 3 33 9 8 FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 21 - 27 August 1996 49 now operated in the cargo role. Max weight (-500, -600, -700): 25,000kg. Accommodation: 60 passengers. Wingspan 32m length 26.3m height 9m. Original design life not known. Fleet leaders Cycles 76,311 (38 over 60,000). Shorts 330 Originally, the SD3-30, a 30-seat utility deriva tive of the Skyvan, was powered by two P&WAC PT6As. Including the military Sherpa, 139 aircraft were produced between 1974 and 1992. The majority of aircraft, how ever, were produced between 1976 and 1985, and the design was superseded by the Shorts 360 from 1982. There are 46 examples which are 15 years old or-blder. The 330's larger sister, the 3 60, will qualify for the 1997 census. Max weight 10,160kg. Accommodation: 30 passengers. Wingspan 22.8m length 17.7m height 4.95m. Design life 30,000 cycles, 30,000h. Fleet leaders Cycles 51,202 (nine aircraft over 40,000). Hours 25,817 (19 aircraft over 20,000). Years 21 years. Average fleet cycles 20,412. Average fleet hours 13,677. Antonov An-12 This aircraft was a development of the An-10, with redesigned rear fuselage and tail unit, and powered by four Ivchenko AI-2 OK turboprops. Civil numbers of this aircraft may increase because of conversions from the military ver sion. Up to 300 could become available eventu ally. A total of 157 pre-1982-build examples remains current. Max weight 61,000kg. Wingspan 38m length 33.1m height 10.53m. Design life 25,000 cycles, 30,000h. Fleet leaders 14,500 cycles, 39,000h, 37 years. An-26 This was the first Soviet load-hauler to boast a pressurised cargo hold. The aircraft is powered by two Ivchenko AI-24VTs and an auxiliary RU-19A-300 power unit is available for take off/cruise. The An-26 is gaining in popularity, with airlines buying military surplus aircraft, particularly since modifications have permitted an increase in payload from 4.5t to 6.3t. About 478 pre-1982 examples are current. The An-2 6 entered service in 1969. Normal payload 4,500kg. Max weight 50,706kg. Design life 16,000 cycles, 30,000h, no age limit. Fleet leaders 17,000 cycles, 27,000h, 27 years. Lockheed L-100 Commercial Hercules A commercial derivative of the ubiquitous C- 130 military transport, the L-100 Commercial Hercules entered production in 1964. A total of 115 aircraft was built, with three versions devel oped —the.basic L-100 and two stretched vari ants, the L-100-20 and L-100-30. All versions are powered by four Allison 501 Turboprops. Production continued through to 1993, although the majority of the aircraft was built before 1985. Some 38 aircraft older than 15 years are in service. Max weight 70,308kg. Max payload (L-100-30): 23,315kg. Wingspan (-30): 40.3m length 34.4m height 11.7m. Original design life not set. Fleet leaders 33,666 cycles, 72,885h, 32 years.
