There are still more than 100 One- Elevens in service, of which more titan half are in operation in Europe. European Aviation, which owns die largest single fleet of die type, signed a memorandum of understanding in 199 5 with Quiet Nacelle on the development of a Stage 3 hushkit for the aircraft. Ordered: 232 Delivered: 232 146 The first four-engined BAe 146 was flown in September 1981, and the type entered service with UK carrier Dan-Air in May 1983. Production of the 146 ceased in 1991 after which 221 aircraft had been completed, of which 219 were delivered to customers. The 146 was superseded by a considerably updated, re-engined version, the Avro International Aerospace' Avro RJ range (seeAI(R) entry). British Aerospace Asset Management-Jets (AMJ) is developing a cockpit upgrade for early- build BAe 146s, based around the introduction of an AlliedSignal satellite-based navigation system. The upgrade will allow operators of the BAe leasing unit's 146s, particularly in Europe and Australia, to cope with the progressive worldwide phase-out of the VLF Omega net work of ground stations. The AMJ-funded design and development programme is aimed at certificating AlliedSignaPs GNS-XLS navi gation system on the 146, with initial deliveries planned for die first quarter of 1997. Ordered: 219 Delivered: 219 Company no longer exists Cammacorp was set up in 1979 to oversee the CFM International CFM56 retrofit pro gramme for the McDonnell Douglas (MDC) DC-8 Series 60, and die company no longer exists. Other partners in the programme were MDC, CFMI, and Grumman Aerospace, the latter being responsible for the manufacture of the engine pods, cowlings and pylons. Between 1981 and 1986, 110 aircraft were retrofitted, with the modified aircraft dubbed the Series 70 (the variants were designated DC-8-71, -72, and -7 3). Most are now freighters. The CFM56-2C5 engines provided the -70 with fuel-consumption improvements of up to 2 3 %. Take-off, climb, cruise-altitude and range performance were also significant ly improved. For aircraft details see McDonnell Douglas entry. Most of the 110 DC-8-70s are operated in the freight role FLIGHT INTERNATIONAL 4 - 10 December 1996 57
