CORPORATE AIRCRAFT Vtsionaire flew the proof-of concept Vantage in November 1996, and approval is scheduled for 1998 of the $50 million test and certification pro gramme involves 40 flights of the proof-of-con- cept vehicle: phase two starts in mid-1997, with the introduction of four more aircraft. US certification is expected in the final quar ter of 1998, by which time six aircraft will be ready for delivery. VisionAire plans to take pro duction to 115 a year by 2003. The city of Ames is partly funding the proto type development, with $2.5 million of capital. A further $5.5 million is to be raised through a syndicated offering. The all-composite five-seat air craft has been designed by Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites (SCI), and is powered by a single 13kN P&WC JT15D-5, buried in the aft fuse lage. The price is $1.6 million. VisionAire is understood to hold deposits for 50 aircraft. Initial performance figures indicate that the Vantage will have a design range of around 1,780km at a 250kt cruise speed, and a high speed cruise of 3 50kt. Maximum altitude will be 41,000ft. The aircraft has an aft-set mid-wing configuration, with slight forward sweep, and a low tailplane. While the Vantage proof-of-con- cept aircraft was completed at Scaled Com posites' Mojave site in California, the initial prototype will be assembled in St Louis. Pro duction aircraft will be assembled in Ames, Ohio, with subassemblies supplied by subcon tractors. Scaled Composites will produce air frame parts at a new site in Montrose, Colorado. The VOKBM- M- 14P piston-powered aircraft is also manufac tured byTechnoavia. Yakovlev is working on a large business-jet airliner, the Yak-77, which is intended to be powered by two 45kN Allison AE3010 turbo- fans. The manufacturer also envisages larger models (dubbed the Yak-177 and Yak-277) for the regional market, which would have capaci ty for up to 70 passengers.
