In October 1981, Texas Air, parent company of Texas International Airlines, acquired a controlling interest in Continental and on 31 October, 1982, Continental and Texas International started to operate as a single carrier under the name of Continental. Texas International, known until 1969 as Trans-Texas Airways and formed originally in 1940 as Aviation Enterprises, commenced scheduled services in October 1947. In September 1983, Continental filed for protection under Chapter 11. In September, 1985, Continental filed a plan of reorganisation with the US Bankruptcy Court and a year later emerged from Chapter 11 protection. In February 1987 the operations of the People Express Group and New York Air were merged into Continental. Continental again filed for Chapter 11 in December 1990.
