AIR TRANSPORT Transaero will lease intrim 767s and 737s RUSSIA'S PRIVATELY owned Transaero plans to add three Boeing 767-200ERs and six 737- 400s to its fleet during 1997, in an effort to boost capacity until deliv eries of next-generation Boeing 737s commence in 1999. The first of the leased aircraft, a 767 and three 737s, are due to join the fleet in June, allowing an expansion of its northern summer timetable. The lessors have not been disclosed, although it is understood that the 767s are 1984- build, Pratt & Whitney JT9D- powered aircraft once operated by Egyptair. These aircraft have been traded back to P&W as part of Egyptair's order for PW4090 engines to power its Boeing 777s. Transaero says that the 767 will be used on a planned Moscow- New York route, although it has not revealed which airport in the US city will be used, or when flights will begin. 3 Finnair signs fresh pacts to strengthen Stockholm hub NEWS IN BRIEF JULIAN MOXON/PARIS FINNISH FLAG-carrier Fin nair has signed co-operative deals with Braathens Safe, Tran- swede and Maersk Air, as part of plans to strengthen its presence at Stockholm, Scandinavia's main hub, in neighbouring Sweden. The deals, which include increased codesharing and links on frequent-flier programmes, follow signs of weakening in Finnair's long-standing co-operation with Lufthansa, which has been threat ened by the German airline's alliance with SAS. The Lufthansa/SAS tie-up has already forced Finnair to cut its ser vices from Stockholm to Germany. "We're not moving away from Lufthansa, but we're looking for other forms of co-operation with other Scandinavian carriers," says Finnair's director, commercial affairs, Sverker Skogberg. The aim is to raise the profile of Stockholm as a Finnair hub, from where it operates 40 flights daily From 1 May, these will be aug mented by new services in co-oper ation with Norway's Braathens, and its partner Transwede. That will allow significant improvements in Finnair's onward connections from Stockholm to domestic airports in Norway and Sweden, as well as on Braathens services to Italy, Jersev, Spain and the UK "Our policy is to negotiate tacti cal codesharing agreements on cer tain routes where there is a likelihood of profitability," says Skogberg. The plan is to add another ten such agreements to the five which were put in place two years ago. • • TWA 800 INQUIRY The public hearing on the July 1996 Trans World Airlines Boeing 747-100 crash near Long Island, USA, is to start "in late summer", says the US National Transportation Safety Board. It adds that an explosion def initely occurred in the cen tre-wing fuel tank, but the cause is still not known and all possibilities, including a missile or bomb, remain under investigation. • AIR PLUS START Air Plus, a new Spanish char ter airline, began operations in March using an Airbus A310-300, leased from United Technologies Fin ance. The Madrid-based air line will initially fly on behalf of Spanair. A second A310 is due to arrive in May.
