AN-2 The Antonov An-2 single-piston-engined util ity biplane, with capacity for up to 12 passen gers, is still produced under licence at PZL. Some 12,000 examples have been built for use worldwide, but most have gone to the former Eastern bloc countries. AN-28 Antonov has considered resuming production of the An-28 (which has been the responsibility of Poland's PZL), re-engined with AlliedSignal TPE331s, although tiie manufacturer is look ing more to the larger An-38 in the short term. An-28 plans centre around a straight resump tion of manufacture, but with two 750kW TPE331-10/1 Is in place of the 720kW WSK- PZL Rzeszow TWD-lOBs used in the Polish WSK-PZL Mielec version. The first Polish An-28 was flown in July 1984 and the type received certification in February 1986. The aircraft has a rear-loading ramp, entered tJirough clamshell doors, fixed tricycle landing gear and is unpressurised. It also has short-take-off-and-landing performance, with automatically deployed leading-edge slats. BEECH KING AIR B200 AND 350 Although it is designed primarily as a business aircraft, the King Air's range and speed make it attractive for use as an airliner on low-density, long-distance, routes. Introduced in 1981, the B200 replaced the earlier 200 model. The B200 is powered by P&WC PT6A-42s, offering improved cruise and altitude performance, greater maximum zero-fuel weight and increased cabin-pressure differentials. All King Air models can be fitted witii optional cargo doors. Top of the range is the Beech King Air 3 50. Four extra windows are provided in the fuselage, which is 860mm longer, with wingspan 1.06m greater. In late 1995, the King Air 350 became the first Western turboprop to be certificated in Russia. US company Stevens Aviation has a supple mental type certificate to fit Lord's NVX acth e noise system to the King Air series. Commuter Air Technology of Scottsdalc, Arizona, has developed a streamlined exhaust- gas extractor for the King Air 200/B200 series, which it says eliminates "cracking problems'' associated with the original design. Production Final assembly is undertaken at the Raytheon plant in Wichita, Kansas.
