COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT seeking ultimately to transfer responsibility for A320 final assembly to I lamburg. Ordered 1,205 (148 A319s, 837 A320s, 220 A321s) Delivered 698 (41 A319s, 584 A320s, 73 A32 Is) A330 The A330 high-capacity, twin-engined wide- body was developed in parallel with the four- engined A340, and was launched as a joint programme in Junel987. The 335-seat (two- class) A3 30-300 was the initial production vari ant, which was first flown in November 1992, and entered service in January 1994 with French carrier Air Inter. A short-fuselage, longer-range version, the A330-200, was launched in November 1995, and is in direct competition to Boeing's success ful 767-300ER. It is also promoted as an efficient, new-generation replacement for age ing long-range tri-jets such as the McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30. The new model is ten frames (5.33m) shorter than the -300, and has increased weights (by using the strengthened wing of the high-gross- weight A340-300) and additional fuel capacity. It is designed to carry 253 passengers (three- class layout) more than 12,000km. In all-econ omy layout, the aircraft can carry 380 passengers more than 10,000km. Airbus flew the first -200 on 13 August, 1997. The new A330 variant has rejuvenated sales of Airbus' widebodv twins and will enter service in April 1998 with Canada 3000. Airbus is now offering a high-gross-weight version of the A330-300, which uses the -200's strengthened wing and MTOW, but does not have the additional fuel capacity. The aircraft, which will be available from early 1999, offers an additional 1,300km range over the standard 8,900km version. The A330 is offered with either the P&W PW4164/4168, GECF6-80ElAor R-RTrent 768/772 as powerplant options. Although Airbus' widebody growth plans are now centred around A340 derivatives, the con sortium has also examined the development of an enlarged version of the A330, dubbed the -400, but these studies are on hold. These enlarged aircraft could be equipped with the larger wing being developed for die A340-600. Production Aerospatiale undertakes final assembly of the A330 alongside the A340, at Toulouse. In 1996, Airbus delivered 38 A330/A340s, consisting often A330s and 28 A340s. Production is increasing, with the com bined rate running at around five a month by mid-1997. Ordered 182 Delivered 60 A340 The four-engined A340 was launched at the same time as the A330, in June 1987, with two versions offered, the -200 and -300, typically seating 263 and 295 passengers respectively, in w: ,<-•.<.-1; ^.-nia—— Model Engines Dimensions Landing Accomodation Max Fuel gear weights (kg) (litres) FAR field lengths take-off landing Span (ml Track (m) Seats ISA ISA Take-off Standard sea-level sea-tevel Speeds (kt) (machl Vno Mno Cruise performance Max cruise Long range speed (kt) speed (kt) Payload details Max (kg) Length BA+20c ISA+20'c (m) Wheelbase (m) Pitch Landing Optional sea-level sea-level Vmo Mmo Max art (ft) At alt Range with (ft) max p/1 (km) Height Tum Zero (m) radius (m) Abreast fuel ISA ISA 5,000ft 5,000ft ISA +20 c ISA +20 c 5,000ft 5,000ft wing area Cabin Operating Irrr1) width empty notes A300-600 Either 2 x 262kN GE Aircraft Engines CF&80C2A1 turbofan. or 2 x 249kN Pratt & Whitney PW4156 turbofan 44.84 9.6 231 165.000 62.000 2,240 1,469 325 0.79 480 54.08 18.6 81 138,000 2.645 1,469 335 0.82 40.000 16.53 34 9 130,000 - 1,673 395 0.89 5.440 260 5.28 87.600 - 1,673 361seats is exit limit. 3 75 is theoretical maximum.
