The first flight was in October 1991,'and the A340-300 and -200 entered service in March 1993 with Air France and Lufthansa, respectively. A high-gross-weight, longer-range version of the -300 entered service with Singapore Airlines in April 1996. The new model has a strengthened wing structure and more-power ful engines. Airbus has also developed a very- long-range derivative of the smaller -200, dubbed the A340-8000 (14,800km range). This derivative has increased weights and additional fuel capacity in the rear cargo hold. Since launch, Airbus has been examining ways of expanding the family by developing stretched derivatives. After examining "simple-stretches", under the A340-400 designation, more-recent Airbus studies have focused on the development of an enlarged wing for a new two-variant fami ly, dubbed the A340-500 and -600, offering, respectively, very long range or increased pas senger capacity at the range of the existing-3 00. In April 1996, the consortium signed a six- month exclusive study agreement with GE for the development of a new engine, but this arrangement collapsed when die two organisa tions could not agree on various key issues, such as the commercial terms. After examining offers from P&W and R-R, Airbus in June chose the latter as die lead sup plier to provide its Trent 700/800-derived, 23 5- 270kN Trent 500 for the new models. The $2.5 billion aircraft programme was launched provi sionally at the same time. Key to the new family is the 20% larger wing, which incorporates a 1.6m wingbox insert to increase area and fuel capacity, along with 1.6m wingtip extensions. The MTOW will be increased to 356t, requiring a four-wheel centre main undercarriage unit to be adopted in place of the existing two-wheel unit. The larger -600 will be almost 11m longer than the -300, and will be capable of carrying 378 passengers (three-class) over distances of 13,500km. This model has some 38% greater fuel capacity than that of the -300. The -500 combines the new wing, engines and weights of die -600, widi a slightly stretched -300 airframe (to balance the enlarged wing), and some 48% more fuel capacity than that of die -300, creating a 316-seater with a range of more than 15,400km. Airbus is aiming to give the programme a full launch before the end of 1997, provided "significant" orders are secured. The pro gramme has already taken commitments from Air Canada and Virgin for 31 aircraft. Service entry is now scheduled for 2002. Airbus is already examining weight and range growth developments to meet potential cus tomers' requirements. Increased weights and 10% more powerful engines could provide up to 1,000km more range.
